Q&A: D2L Selects Amazon Web Services Cloud

Wondering what this change will mean? We asked Cheryl Ainoa, COO of D2L, to tell us more about this announcement. Here’s what she had to say.

Question: D2L just announced that we have selected AWS Cloud as our primary strategic public cloud infrastructure provider. Why did we make this change?

Cheryl Ainoa: The short answer is to better serve Brightspace users around the world. Using AWS Cloud will allow us to innovate even faster. By using this global infrastructure platform, we can accelerate our global expansion and serve more users around the world more efficiently. But we can also take advantage of built-in AWS Cloud services, like elasticity, storage and search, allowing us to focus more energy on improving the learning experience. For example, instead of buying, configuring, tuning and running a search service at cloud-scale, we simply use the built-in AWS Cloud Elasticsearch service. And the more energy we can focus on creating a great learning experience and improving learning, the better Brightspace users will be!

Why did D2L choose AWS?

Cheryl: We chose AWS Cloud based on our own evaluation and AWS’s proven track record as a leading Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud provider, recognized by Gartner. Check out how AWS stacks up in the Gartner Report.

What does this mean for how the service is delivered to customers?

Cheryl: To date, we’ve used a combination of infrastructure services to run Brightspace in various geographies. We’ve used our Brightspace Cloud approach to ensure customers receive an exceptional end-to-end uptime, reliability and security across it all. Many D2L customers are already running on AWS Cloud today. Customers who are not on AWS Cloud are generally very positive about the prospects about running on AWS. Any move for those customers would be in close consultation and discussion with those customers.

Do customers keep the uptime and availability they’re used to?

Cheryl: Yes! Customers can expect the same high level of uptime and availability they are accustomed to.

Can D2L continue to provide its end-to-end security approach?

Cheryl: Yes! With AWS’s security we will continue to provide customers with global end-to-end security approach, ISO27001 and SSAE 16 SOC1 Type II/ SOC2 Type II compliance, along with our upcoming ISO27017 and ISO27018 certifications, now on one trusted infrastructure.

Is customer data safe?

Cheryl: We strongly believe in data privacy and protection for all Brightspace users, regardless of the hosting platform. We take measures to ensure that all customer data is protected using industry-standard encryption, both in-transit and while stored on disk, among other security protection mechanisms. We have more details on our website. AWS does not have access to see customers’ data.
