Accessibility at D2L

Following an external audit of Brightspace Core, we are publishing an auditor-certified Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) as of January 1, 2024:

Auditor-certified D2L Brightspace Core Accessibility Conformance Report – January 1 2024.

This report is based on the latest VPAT 2.5 INT template published by the Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC) and contains three sections, showing:

  • conformance with WCAG 2.2 at Levels A, AA, and AAA,
  • compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, 1973 revised in 2017, and
  • compliance with the Harmonised European Standard EN 301 549 V3.2.1 (2021-03).

When the World Wide Web consortium released the latest version of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2 on October 5, 2023, we published D2L’s Brightspace Core WCAG 2.2 Accessibility Conformance Report on the same day, showing full conformance with the new criteria on the date of release.  This was possible because our dedicated teams worked zealously to align Brightspace with the new requirements while the draft recommendations evolved over 3 years. The current Brightspace Core ACR of January 1, 2024 replaces this report dated October 5, 2023.

We are committed to reporting on the accessibility of D2L Brightspace openly and transparently. We view accessibility as an opportunity to continually improve user experience in our solution. Our Accessibility Conformance Report is based on automated and manual accessibility testing, involving a community of assistive technology users through our accessibility partner, and consultations with our client-led Accessibility Interest Group.

At D2L, we have a mature accessibility program. Our product process is closely guided by the most up-to-date accessibility standards – currently WCAG 2.2. Our accessibility program is cross-functional, which means each team takes ownership for accessibility in their own work. Accessibility exceptions are raised as high priority software defects and are triaged like other high-level defects. We take this approach because, at D2L, accessibility is not merely a checklist; it is a commitment to empower and engage individuals in their learning goals.
