Desire 2 Give: Celebrating 25 Years Through Community Action

D2L is a mission-driven company. We believe that education has the power to change the world. We also believe that mission-driven companies need engaged people. That’s why D2Lers can dedicate up to two workdays per year to engage in volunteerism that gives back to the community through organizations that matter most to them. This program, known as D2L’s Volunteer Time Off (VTO) program, reflects our desire to make a difference in the world. It aims to bring together our people, our knowledge, our passion and our technology to make a positive impact.

As part of D2L’s 25th anniversary celebrations, we set a goal to collectively use our VTO to volunteer for 2,500 hours globally. The D2L community not only achieved this goal but exceeded it and reached an astounding 2,857 volunteer hours. That’s equivalent to 357 days—almost a full year’s worth of time given back to our communities.

CEO John Baker personally shared the importance of building community through volunteerism with D2Lers.

Check out some stories directly from D2Lers on how they spent their VTO and why.

To thank the doctors and staff for their dedication, care and support, People and Culture Business Partner Joelle Wilhelm has been volunteering to provide valuable training opportunities for future prosthetists.

Technical Account Manager Rabia Ijaz spent her time volunteering to teach in her local community, which is an experience she has found to be incredibly rewarding both personally and professionally.

Product Manager Jackie Guan noticed a need to help fight food insecurity in her community. Since volunteering, she has come to appreciate how the food bank fosters a true sense of teamwork. Inspired by the vital role she can play in fighting hunger, Jackie spearheads multiple volunteer events each year.

By working together, we create a ripple effect that touches lives and fosters a sense of unity and purpose, initiating a positive cycle that benefits us and the communities we serve. From improving food insecurity and affordable housing to environmental clean-ups, tutoring and mentoring, D2Lers truly made a positive impact in their communities across the globe.

This accomplishment of not only meeting but exceeding our VTO goal is a testament to the dedication, effort and caring nature of our teams. Moments like these highlight the strength of our community and our commitment to social responsibility and sustainability.
