Think you’d be good in sales?

topics

“Greg, you should be in sales.”  I’ve heard that advice my whole life.  I remember back when I was 9, my grandmother told me I could convince a penguin to buy ice.  I should’ve known at that point where my career was headed as my grandmother always seemed to know something about me before I did.

Personally, like many other post-secondary graduates, I never thought I would get into sales.  When I finished school, I thought I might get into marketing or even Human Resources, but I really had no idea what I wanted to do.  One thing I can say with certainty is that if you want to start a career in sales or if you are even slightly interested in sales, the Business Development team at D2L is a great starting point.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a year of work go by so quickly.  From the first day I walked in the door to now, working at D2L has been the most enjoyable experience in my career.  I remember walking into the office on the first day and being taken aback.  I’ve spent plenty of time in offices, but this office layout is unlike any I’d ever experienced before.  There’s something to say about the warm and welcoming feel you get from every individual that works at D2L.  It speaks volumes about the culture of the company and inspires you to do your best work alongside some of the best people in the world.

For me, I started as a BDA (Business Development Associate) back in March of 2017.  This role is a great starting point for those with no sales experience as you work to follow-up with and qualify all individuals who engage in marketing-generated activities.  It provides a great foundation for a successful career as you learn about the company, develop your sales skills, and meet individuals from across the organization.  The mentoring and support from colleagues and the management team has really helped me develop in my role.

I have personally grown a lot over the past year and recently made a transition into D2L’s Outbound Business Development role known as the BDR (Business Development Representative) position.  It’s opened a whole new set of challenges and learning experiences for me in developing cold prospecting skills. For those who love to learn and grow this is a great next step!

I had never experienced such a tremendous climate of group collaboration in a workplace before I joined D2L.  There are always new learning experiences, opportunities for growth, and challenges that inspire employees to do their best work.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard it said, “We do our best work to transform the way the world learns” and it sums up D2L perfectly.  I’m very proud of the work I, and those around me do, and I’m looking forward to my future here at D2L.
