DevLearn is the place where learning professionals come together to connect with peers, explore the latest technologies, and learn about the trends shaping the world of work and learning. We’re excited to be back this year and even more excited to have Carrie Maynard, manager of learning experience design and architecture at Serefin, share her perspective. Join her Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 1-1:30pm.

Earlier this year, we were proud to be jointly recognized with Serefin for two Brandon Hall Gold awards, one for Best Learning Strategy and another for Best Competencies and Skills Development.

Carrie is a multi-award winning learning strategy and workforce development leader. She was recently honored with a D2L Excellence Award at Fusion, D2L’s annual user conference. During her session, Carrie will share how her team is building a competency-based learning ecosystem that connects learning to performance, development and professional growth.

Keep reading to find out some of the topics she’ll be exploring, and remember to drop by booth 539 during the event.

From Courses to Capabilities: Building a Skills-Informed Learning Ecosystem

As AI reshapes the skills employees need, learning teams need to move beyond delivering courses and tracking completion. That means building durable skills that employees can develop, demonstrate and carry with them as their careers evolve.

But models that have traditionally worked in corporate settings aren’t necessarily up to this new task. The focus needs to be on designing for the skill, not the topic. Skills development comes with its own complexities, too. If organizations don’t understand what went into a skill, it can easily lose its value and transferability over time.

Serefin’s competency framework is becoming its North Star. It provides clarity at all levels—from employees to managers and executives—and makes it easier to track learning back to outcomes.

Collaborating Across the Organization to Bring a Competency Framework to Life

Developing its competency framework required collaboration with a range of stakeholders, each with different needs. Team leaders, who would implement the framework, needed to understand its purpose, structure, and practical application, even if they were new to competency-based learning. Organizational leaders also needed regular updates on how the framework would support business goals, without getting bogged down in the technical details.

Tailoring the message to each audience and keeping the framework relevant to their work helped Serefin strengthen its impact.

Using Competencies to Inform Career Journeys

The close collaboration that went into creating its competency framework makes it a more effective tool for supporting professional development across the organization. Employees can follow paths that are both consistent with team expectations and customizable to reflect their individual needs and goals.

This gives the organization a stronger foundation for workforce development, internal mobility, and equitable career growth.

Connecting Skill Development to Organizational Outcomes

Learning technology plays an important role by connecting competencies to learning experiences, organizing development pathways, capturing data, and making progress more visible to employees, managers, and leaders.

This can help the organization better understand whether employees are applying what they have learned and developing the skills needed for future roles.

Developing a Skills Framework for Your Organization

Serefin developed its competency framework in roughly four months, showcasing that organizations don’t need to solve every part of the skills journey at once. The work can start with a focused set of competencies and a practical plan for connecting learning opportunities to skills growth. From there, teams can iterate content, refine learning pathways, and integrate performance information over time.
