D2L Selected by C-BEN's CompetentU to help Expand Competency-Based Education

Together D2L and C-BEN can help enable leaders to embrace mastery learning

Press Release

D2L, a global learning technology company, was selected by the Competency-Based Education Network (C-BEN) to help launch CompetentU, a new professional learning program that teaches competency-based education (CBE).

CompetentU is built on D2L Brightspace, and can help leaders in higher education, workforce and corporate HR to develop and deploy competency-based programs while experiencing a model CBE program themselves. Supported by D2L, C-BEN has developed CompetentU as a more flexible learning experience that can showcase CBE best practices: learners can complete the courses at their own pace, receive one-on-one support from coaches, and tailor learning activities to learner goals.

“We wanted to create a learning experience that allows learners to really walk away with something,” says Natalia Mejia, Senior Learning Experience Designer at C-BEN. “Whether that’s just experiencing a CBE program first-hand or developing a real program that they themselves will implement.”

The CompetentU courses cover both the theory and practice of CBE and can leverage the Competencies feature in Brightspace to help scaffold progression and use of performance-based assessments. This can help learners have an understanding of a topic before moving on to the next one. Throughout the program, learners can receive feedback from C-BEN’s CBE experts and can schedule a synchronous meeting with a coach for extra support if they need it.

D2L has supported C-BEN since its early days. When we were looking for a platform to bring our vision of CompetentU to life they were the first LMS provider we spoke to, and Brightspace proved to be the best option for us.

Lacey McCann, Senior Director of CBE Products and Experience at C-BEN

“CompetentU helps to empower leaders to embrace competency-based education and unlock real opportunities by providing them with a strong foundation in CBE and its transformative impact,” said Dr. Cristi Ford, Chief Learning Officer at D2L. “D2L is proud to support C-BEN’s mission to create more equitable learning opportunities and help learners master their own journey.”
