TRECA Digital Academy
TRECA, a virtual public school in Ohio, has been using D2L Lumi (in beta) to generate assessment items since the fall of 2023. Teachers say that D2L Lumi encourages them to think differently and can present question possibilities that they may not have considered without the support of generative AI.
“The AI tools take some of the pressure off teachers, giving them an inspirational starting point that helps them think a little more broadly,” said Kristina McLaughlin, Assistant Director of Curriculum and Career and Technical Education at TRECA Digital Academy.
Northeast Iowa Community College
Northeast Iowa Community College was among the first institutions to try D2L Lumi (in beta). They have found substantial success with the quiz and practice question generators, which have significantly expedited course development.
“We discovered that we could take a document that already had questions in it, put it in an HTML page within the LMS, and have D2L Lumi’s AI question generator essentially build the same questions with the correct formatting for Brightspace. That saves a ton of time,” said Jordan O’Connell, Instructional Designer at Northeast Iowa Community College. “Overall, having Lumi has just been so convenient and has helped make course design so much easier.”
Gwinnett Online Campus
Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC), the online entity for Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) in Lawrenceville, Georgia, is another early adopter of D2L Lumi (in beta). With D2L Lumi, GOC educators feel in control of their courses and the content they create, using functions like Lumi Quiz to help generate Brightspace quiz questions based on their own course content.
“One thing our educators especially liked was being able to select specific content for question generation. D2L Lumi’s copy-and-paste function made this possible. It helped them zero in on the result they were looking for. After all, they’re content experts and can recognize a good question when they see it,” said Laura Herring, Coordinator of Technology Integration at Gwinnett Online Campus.
