D2L, a global leader in learning innovation, today announced that it will retire support for Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.1 in D2L Brightspace and transition exclusively to LTI 1.3 over the next year. LTI 1.3 is designed to provide stronger authentication, improved data protection and a more secure foundation for integrations.
“LTI 1.3 has provided a stronger security foundation for learning technology integrations for several years, and D2L has supported and encouraged customers and partners as they made that transition. We believe the time has come to complete that work by retiring LTI 1.1 support in D2L Brightspace. We recognize that any technology transition requires planning and coordination. D2L is committed to working closely with customers and partners to make this transition as smooth as possible.”
LTI 1.1 is a legacy version of the Learning Tools Interoperability standard that is no longer certified or supported by 1EdTech. LTI 1.3, the current standard, uses modern security technologies, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect and public-key cryptography, to provide a stronger foundation for secure connections between D2L Brightspace and integrated tools. It also supports additional LTI Advantage services and integration capabilities.
Next steps
To enable a smooth transition for customers, D2L will retire LTI 1.1 support in phases. By February 2027, customers will no longer be able to add new LTI 1.1 integrations through the Brightspace user interface. Beginning in March 2027, customers may opt in to disabling LTI 1.1 launches in their environments. LTI 1.1 launches will then be disabled for all customers by October 2027. D2L will provide migration guidance throughout the transition.
Administrators should review their LTI tool inventory, identify tools using LTI 1.1 and contact providers or internal development teams about their migration plans. Today, all new integrations with D2L Brightspace are required to use LTI 1.3.
Technology providers and integration partners should assess customer use of LTI 1.1, develop and test LTI 1.3 versions of their applications and communicate migration requirements to customers as early as possible. Integration partners can use Brightspace Apps as a streamlined way to create and distribute LTI 1.3 applications.
