USC Reimagines Digital Learning on an Accelerated Timeline

When the learning management system (LMS) University of Southern California (USC) had relied on for more than 25 years was set to retire, the institution faced a critical decision.

With just 10 months to complete the transition, USC could have taken the easier path and moved to a successor platform. Instead, they chose to invest in a solution built for the future. For a university spanning 23 schools, more than 46,000 students and over 4,500 faculty, the stakes were high. USC needed a platform that could support modern teaching and learning, improve accessibility and deliver a consistent experience at scale.

The result was a university-wide move to D2L Brightspace that brought together faculty, students, academic leaders and technology teams around a shared vision for digital learning.

USC transitioned more than 4,700 faculty and 46,000 students to Brightspace, supporting teaching and learning across 23 schools and programs.

With only 10 months to complete its LMS replacement, USC migrated more than 40,000 courses and successfully launched Brightspace on schedule.

A 67-course pilot spanning 20 schools helped USC identify challenges early, strengthen training and support a smooth university-wide rollout.

USC completed its transition without any issues escalating to the president or provost, demonstrating the success of its governance, planning and support strategy
