With Te Rina Leonard, Chief Executive Officer, Te Kura New Zealand

Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura)—New Zealand’s state distance education provider—aspires to be a fully bilingual school, offering learning programs in English and Maori, the indigenous language of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

In partnership with D2L, Te Kura has embarked on an ambitious project to develop a Maori language app to support that goal. "This is a direct way of redress through education," says Te Rina Leonard, CEO of Te Kura. "Of providing people with the ability to reclaim language and culture. It's core to healing and it's core also to those ākonga (students) having the active choice of being able to relearn their language."
