In this episode of Teach & Learn, Dr. Emma Zone sits down with Dr. Mitch Colver, vice president and associate provost of engagement and retention at American Public University System to explore what student success requires in today’s higher education landscape. Drawing on learning science, institutional research and lived experience, Mitch introduces the concept of rigor and relief as a paired experience, arguing that challenge alone is not enough to produce meaningful learning. Students grow through productive struggle, but only when that struggle is balanced with the right kinds of academic, social and human support.

The conversation spans faculty practice, institutional leadership and the evolving role of AI in learning. Mitch shares data-backed insights on why one-on-one human interactions continue to drive retention, explains how faculty feedback can function as both rigor and relief and reflects on what he learned by returning to school as a student in the age of generative AI. Together, Emma and Mitch examine ethical AI use, digital hygiene and why teaching students how to rebuild after challenge may be one of the most important responsibilities educators have today.
