Press Release
D2L, a global leader in learning innovation, has sponsored the release of AI Literacies in Practice: A Comprehensive Playbook for Higher Education, a new guide designed to help higher education institutions begin or accelerate their work building literacies for AI in education. The report was developed alongside the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET) and Opened Culture.
The playbook can help institutions build the mindsets and skillsets needed to use AI ethically, creatively, and collaboratively. Organized around pedagogy, operations, and governance, it highlights the interconnected “constellations” of AI literacies that emerge when AI is used thoughtfully in education.
“Higher education is at a pivotal moment. AI isn’t just another technology trend, it’s reshaping how we think about learning, leadership, and the role of human judgment. This playbook is an invitation for campuses to use AI as a catalyst for more creative, human‑centered teaching and decision‑making, rather than something to fear.”
Grounded in eight interwoven literacies that can shape how people learn, engage, and lead with AI across institutional life, the playbook offers:
- Approach Maps designed to align strategies to your stage of readiness – whether exploring, piloting, or scaling AI.
- Design Principles that can help translate AI literacies into ethical, practical decision‑making.
- Role Highlights clarifying first steps for faculty, administrators, technologists, librarians, and students.
- Remix Spotlights offering adaptable activities to revise assignments, processes, or policies.
- Practical Toolkits including assignment redesign templates and AI governance decision guides.
- Reflection Prompts that support individual and team‑based planning.
“AI is advancing quickly, and education cannot afford to fall behind,” said Angela Gunder, CEO and Founder of Opened Culture. “Developing broad, values‑driven AI literacies helps institutions move from reacting to AI to shaping how it’s used. When innovation is aligned with purpose, technology can strengthen, not erode, our shared capacity for learning, opportunity, and sound judgment.”
“AI is already reshaping the world our students are preparing to enter,” said Van L. Davis, PhD, Executive Director of WCET. “By building strong AI literacies, institutions can ensure that learners benefit from these tools in meaningful, ethical, and practical ways. This playbook gives campuses the guidance they need to support students, empower faculty, and make thoughtful decisions about the future of digital learning.”
