About This Series

The global conversation on AI literacies development in education has been building over the last few years, kicking off with the milestone creation of the Dimensions of AI Literacies taxonomy. Built by D2L partners, Opened Culture, this resource leveraged their international research from studies commissioned by UNESCO IITE. From that foundation grew a community of practitioners, researchers, and institutional leaders across six continents asking the same fundamental questions about how AI literacies are the key to aligning AI in education, work, and life as a force for good.

One year ago on National AI Literacies Day, that conversation found a home in AI Literacies Unlocked, a free, open course hosted on D2L Brightspace. On National AI Literacies Day, March 27, 2026, we are celebrating its first anniversary, relaunching it with new research and new stories from the field, and inviting this community to shape what comes next.

What to Expect

This session is an official National AI Literacies Day event, part of a growing global observance that brings together organizations committed to advancing AI literacies across education, workforce, and community contexts.

The community gathering here did not begin with a webinar. It began with a multi-year global research study commissioned by UNESCO IITE and Shanghai Open University — work that produced the Dimensions of AI Literacies taxonomy and, eventually, AI Literacies Unlocked, the free open course that has since been recognized by the Hewlett Foundation and MIT Open Learning and accessed by educators and leaders around the world. This event celebrates one year of that course in the world, marks several significant new milestones in the work, and looks ahead to the global convening this community is building toward in 2027.

Dr. Angela Gunder and Dr. Cristi Ford co-host a 90-minute session designed to feel less like a webinar and more like the kind of gathering this community deserves — real conversation, genuine interactivity, and a room full of people who take AI literacies seriously. This event also launches AI Literacies in Practice: A Global Community Series, a year-long journey through the eight dimensions of AI literacies and how they are being lived in contexts around the world.
