Every application we receive is personally reviewed by a member of our Talent Acquisition team - yes, a real person looks at your resume! While we use AI tools internally to streamline tasks like meeting notes, summaries, and administrative work, these tools never rank resumes, make hiring decisions, or influence candidate evaluations.
We are seeking a Senior Content Strategist with deep experience in API documentation and developer enablement to join our team. This is a senior, individual contributor role requiring strong strategic judgment, technical depth, and the ability to independently own and evolve developer documentation practices.
As part of the Global Support and Community organization, you will lead the strategy and execution for our API and developer documentation ecosystem. You will translate complex technical systems into clear, usable, and scalable content that supports developer success, integration adoption, and long-term platform growth. You will work closely with Engineering, Product, UX, and Localization partners and serve as a trusted documentation expert within the product development lifecycle.
How will I make an impact?
- Own and execute the end-to-end content strategy for API reference and developer enablement documentation.
- Produce high-quality, developer focused documentation, including:
- API reference material.
- Developer usage and enablement content (onboarding guides, integration guides, workflows, tutorials, and conceptual explanations).
- Code samples, patterns, and best practice guidance.
- Design and maintain information architecture standards for API documentation and developer portal.
- Develop and maintain documentation templates, style guides, Markdown standards, and writing conventions to ensure consistency and scalability.
- Partner closely with Engineering and Product teams to understand APIs, data models, workflows, and release plans.
- Participate in and support development workflows, including reviewing documentation changes via GitHub pull requests.
- Manage documentation deliverables aligned with agile release cycles and evolving platform capabilities.
- Define, document, and continuously improve documentation workflows and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Leverage AI tools to enhance documentation quality, consistency, reuse, and production efficiency.
- Conduct content audits to identify gaps, redundancies, and opportunities across API and developer documentation.
- Analyze documentation usage, adoption, and feedback to drive continuous improvement.
What you’ll bring to the role:
Content Strategy and Developer Experience
- Develop and evolve API documentation strategies that directly support developer success and product adoption.
- Advocate for developer experience best practices across content structure, discoverability, and usability.
- Apply AI thoughtfully to improve content quality, scalability, and maintainability.
- Establish and maintain standards, templates, glossaries, and documentation governance.
Technical Writing and Documentation
- Write, edit, and maintain clear, accurate, and developer centric technical content.
- Translate complex technical concepts into usable documentation for varied developer personas.
- Ensure documentation remains aligned with evolving APIs, SDKs, and platform architecture.
Localization and Internationalization
- Partner with the D2L Localization team and vendors to ensure documentation is translation ready and globally scalable.
- Review and QA localized content for accuracy, consistency, and cultural relevance.
- Support translation memory and terminology consistency across developer content.
Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate cross functionally with Engineering, Product, UX, and Support teams.
- Communicate documentation strategy, risks, and recommendations clearly to stakeholders.
- Act as a subject matter expert and advisor for developer documentation practices.
Measurement and Continuous Improvement
- Use analytics and feedback to evaluate documentation effectiveness and developer outcomes.
- Identify trends and opportunities to improve content quality, structure, and coverage.
- Stay current with industry best practices in API documentation, developer enablement, and content strategy.
Platform and Implementation Knowledge
- Strong understanding of HTTP based REST APIs and JSON data structures.
- Working knowledge of modern development stacks and concepts, including:
- .NET and/or Node.js / JavaScript ecosystems.
- API lifecycle concepts (versioning, deprecation, backward compatibility)
- Hands-on experience with GitHub, including pull request-based development workflows.
Documentation Tooling & Authoring Skills
- Experience with documentation tooling and formats, including:
- Markdown.
- Structured authoring or XML based tools (e.g., MadCap Flare).
- Working knowledge of HTML and CSS for documentation presentation and styling.
- Familiarity with CMS or portal-based documentation delivery platforms.
Suggested Qualifications/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, technical writing, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5-8 years total relevant experience, including 3-5 years working on developer or technical documentation within a complex technical environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently at a senior level – prioritizing work across competing initiatives, navigating ambiguity, and driving documentation outcomes without close supervision.
- Proven experience working in docs-as-code environments, including GitHub and pull‑request‑based review processes.
- Experience collaborating directly with software engineers, product managers, and UI/UX design partners to influence documentation approach, structure, and developer experience.
- Familiarity with localization workflows and translation tooling, with an understanding of how content structure and reuse impact global scalability.
