At a time when artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the workplace, understanding how employees perceive these changes is crucial.

D2L collaborated with Morning Consult to conduct an extensive survey of nearly 1,000 American workers for its annual White Paper, which examines the evolving landscape of corporate learning and skills development. One of the survey’s objectives was to assess employees’ attitudes towards AI in the workplace. The results reveal a generally optimistic outlook, tempered by a need for structured support and clear communication from employers.

“Our survey shows that workers are optimistic about the potential of AI, and there’s an opportunity for more structured support from employers. With strategic investments in training and the right learning platform, workers can feel more empowered to integrate AI into their work,” said John Baker, President and Chief Executive Officer at D2L.

This blog post delves into the key insights learned from the survey about generative AI. We highlight how employees view AI as a tool for enhancing their roles and share steps companies can take to successfully integrate AI into the workplace.

The Role of AI in the Modern Workplace

AI is no longer a futuristic concept; it’s a present reality reshaping how businesses operate. The World Economic Forum reported that by 2030, work tasks will be nearly evenly divided between human-led, machine-led, and hybrid human-machine collaboration. This shift underscores the importance of integrating AI into learning and development (L&D) strategies to ensure employees are equipped with the skills needed to thrive.

Employees Are Optimistic About AI

The survey reveals a strong sense of optimism among employees regarding AI’s role in the workplace. Key findings include:

  • 69% of employees believe AI will help them perform their jobs better.
  • 68% expect AI to free up time for higher-level tasks.
  • 67% don’t think that AI will eventually take their jobs.

These statistics highlight a general optimism among employees regarding AI’s potential to enhance their work experience. The majority see AI as a tool that can automate mundane tasks, allowing them to focus on more strategic, creative and meaningful activities.

AI Adoption in Skills Development and Work Tasks

The data indicates a growing adoption of AI in the workplace, with many employees already leveraging these tools to enhance their productivity and skillsets. Key findings include:

  • 64% of employees report that their company provides AI tools.
  • 63% share that their employer encourages AI innovation.
  • 39% have used AI-powered tools to develop new skills or complete work tasks in the past 1-3 years.

This growing AI adoption in the workplace suggests that both employees and employers see value in AI to enhance efficiency and productivity.

Lack of Clarity on Employer AI Strategy

Despite the availability of AI tools and encouragement, many employees feel there is a lack of clear guidance and structured support from their employers. This gap highlights the need for organizations to develop clear AI integration strategies:

  • While 64% of employees have access to AI tools, only 25% strongly agree that their company has a clear AI vision.
  • 61% report access to formal training, yet 58% feel left to their own devices when learning AI.

Employees are looking for comprehensive training and guidance on how to effectively integrate and use AI in their daily workflows. This gap between AI tool availability and strategic guidance highlights the need for organizations to develop clear AI integration strategies and provide more structured support to their employees.

The Human-AI Collaboration

Employees recognize the strengths of AI in handling repetitive and data-heavy tasks. Key findings include:

  • 52% believe AI excels at summarizing reports.
  • 46% see AI as effective in conducting data analysis.
  • 43% think AI is good at performing research.

However, employees also value human skills that AI can’t replicate, such as creativity, problem-solving, and communication. Striking the right balance between AI and human expertise will be crucial for the future of work.

Strategies for Successful AI Integration

The survey results indicate that most employers are supportive of AI usage, and many employees are already incorporating it into their work. However, a significant number of individuals expressed a desire for more guidance and training.

To address this, companies may consider the following practical suggestions:

Implement Clear AI Policies and a Vision

  • Communicate a clear AI strategy: Ensure that the company’s AI vision and goals are well-defined and communicated to all employees.
  • Develop ethical guidelines for AI use: Establish policies that address ethical considerations and ensure responsible AI deployment.

Enhance AI Literacy and Training Programs

  • Develop comprehensive AI training modules: Ensure employees understand the basics of AI, its applications, and how it can be leveraged in their specific roles.
  • Offer continuous learning opportunities: Provide ongoing education and resources to keep employees updated on the latest AI advancements and best practices.
  • Use AI to tailor learning experiences: Implement AI-driven platforms that personalize training content based on individual employee needs and learning styles.

Integrate AI Into Daily Workflows

  • Automate routine tasks: Identify repetitive tasks that can be automated using AI, freeing up employees to focus on higher-level strategic activities.
  • Enhance decision-making processes: Use AI to provide data-driven insights that support informed decision-making across the organization.

Charting the Course for AI Integration

The integration of AI in the workplace presents both opportunities and challenges. While employees are generally optimistic about AI’s potential to enhance their roles, there’s a clear need for structured support and clear communication from employers. By aligning learning strategies with business goals and providing comprehensive AI training, companies can set themselves and their employees up for a smoother transition into the future of work.

“Workers see the value in AI for completing repetitive and data-driven tasks, freeing up time to focus on human strengths like creativity, problem solving and communication,” Baker shared. “AI has the power to transform the way we work, and with a great learning system, AI can elevate and scale the meaningful work we do.”

The full White Paper will be released in July. Keep an eye on D2L’s Newsroom for updates.
