Press Release
D2L, a global learning technology company, today announces that Utrecht University has selected D2L Brightspace as its new learning platform to help it deliver a user-friendly online and blended learning experience for students and staff.
Utrecht University is one of the largest public universities in the Netherlands and a prestigious research-focused institution. Digital learning is an important part of Utrecht University’s educational innovation; it was one of the first universities in the Netherlands to introduce blended learning. Brightspace will replace Blackboard as Utrecht University’s chosen Learning Management System (LMS) to align with its vision for a digital ecosystem of educational tools and services that work seamlessly together to support students and lecturers.
D2L was successful after a comprehensive tendering process during which the University scored providers on a range of criteria and teachers, students and administrators assessed the shortlisted platforms. D2L scored highest on average through the process.
“Students look for modern digital experiences that meet their high expectations and their feedback was that Brightspace works in a clear and structured way,” said Alex Lodder, virtual learning environment project manager at Utrecht University. We are excited by the platform’s user-friendly functionalities for creating interactive content and the mobile experience. All these things are important, but we also looked for a partner that aligns with our corporate public values. D2L scored highly there, with a sharp vision on the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence, and an excellent rating for sustainability.”
D2L Brightspace is used by more than 18 million people worldwide and its intuitive design helps to make it easier for learners and educators to access and create course materials, collaborate, track learner progress, and engage in meaningful personal learning experiences.
“Utrecht University has an exciting digital learning vision and a compelling commitment to helping students achieve their learning goals and supporting staff in delivering high-quality education. We are delighted to have been chosen as Utrecht University’s LMS in these endeavours,” said Rob Telfer, Director of Higher Education EMEA at D2L. “We are also proud that D2L stood out for its corporate values and approach to sustainability because, operating with integrity, empowering our people and protecting our environment are central to our commitments.”
Training and implementation for Brightspace is now underway for a phased introduction that aims to rollout Brightspace to all 39,000+ students by September 2025.
