Here’s how D2L’s Brightspace LMS is helping the Philippines educational landscape embrace technology and move towards digital transformation

D2L’s clientele has grown from two to 27 schools and colleges within the last seven months in the Philippines. To strengthen its position, D2L has partnered with local players, including Computer Assisted Learning and Globe Telecom Inc

Press Release

A global leader in edtech software and technology, D2L, the creators of the Brightspace LMS, recently entered the Philippines market with the goal to help revolutionise the education sector, by enabling academic institutions to embrace technology and move towards digital transformation. To strengthen their position in the country, they have partnered with local key players, including Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) — a leading ICT education programmes and technology services company — and Globe Telecom, one the country’s leading telecom companies.

Since their soft launch through Globe Telecom in the Philippine market 5 years ago, Globe Telecom has been instrumental in helping D2L expand and strengthen their position in the country’s edtech scene helping sign on 23 customers so far. As a recent D2L partner, CAL has already signed on 4 new customers, one of which is The City Government of Taguig, for the Department of Education Division of Taguig and Pateros (TAPAT), which has responsibilities for the 37 public schools in Taguig City.

Some of the independent colleges and schools on Brightspace LMS include De La Salle-College of St Benilde, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Chevalier School and Informatics Philippines among others.

“We have the expertise and experience in the education technology sector that can help the industry here in the Philippines embrace digital transformation, which is the future, pandemic or not. We seek to create awareness about LMS and its importance in elevating education to the next level while helping schools and colleges get future-ready, and the Philippine education industry understands that. The way our numbers are growing, we are confident that D2L’s Brightspace LMS will play an important part in orchestrating the tech disruptions in the education landscape in the Philippines.”, said Nick Hutton, Regional Director at D2L.

D2L already has a strong presence in other Asian countries, including Singapore, India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia. The edtech company’s entry is in line with the government’s push for online education in the Philippines.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, the government of the Philippines has emphasised the importance of online education with the creation of a dedicated office in the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The office will spearhead the implementation of online learning and distance education in higher education institutions (HEIs) across the country to address the changing educational needs of students as well as teachers. In addition, making more strides towards the digitalisation of education in public schools, The House Committee on Basic Education and Culture recently approved the Public Schools of the Future in Technology (PSOFT) Act. This act legislates a roadmap to the digitalisation of public school education in the next five to ten years.

Future-proofing education in the Philippines with the easy-to-use Brightspace LMS

According to a study, one of the main challenges faced by Filipino students in transitioning to an online curriculum amidst the pandemic was the lack of infrastructure. This is where D2L’s Brightspace LMS can step in. It comes with a wide range of rich features like self-paced learning, better parent engagement, and is supported by all mobile devices with no need for a separate mobile app. As per Statista, last year some 70.7 million people accessed the internet using their mobile phones in the Philippines. By the year 2025, it is estimated that mobile internet users in the country would reach over 90 million. D2L’s Brightspace LMS leverages the ever-increasing mobile phone penetration and smartphone usage in the Philippines to give learners increased flexibility on where and how they learn, without the need for expensive hardware.

Making education more accessible for students with special needs using the Brightspace LMS

The Brightspace LMS has been built with accessibility in mind. At De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS), an all-inclusive education can be now implemented in classrooms using D2L’s Brightspace LMS. In SDEAS, teachers can easily use images and videos to facilitate the learning process in the classroom. For assessments, students are able to film themselves signing their essays in Filipino Sign Language and can easily submit these assignments through the LMS. Likewise, hearing and Deaf teachers can provide feedback with videos in FSL, hence enabling efficient and personalized learning both inside and outside the classroom.

“With D2L’s Brightspace platform, learning has become more democratic, as students are provided with options regarding the time, place, and pace at which they want to learn. With its competency- and outcomes-based structure, differentiated learning — that is difficult to conduct in a face-to-face mode of teaching — is now possible,” Rogelio “Tugel” Dela Cruz Jr., Head of Educational Technology Office at De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.

Catering to learners and educators from school to college level and even beyond that, D2L’s Brightspace LMS offers adaptive learning that automatically recommends content to learners based on gaps in their current knowledge, and its competency-based learning features allow for individual pacing and faster completion times.
