Accessibility Conformance

D2L is committed to reporting on product accessibility publicly and transparently. Every year we organize a third-party accessibility audit of Brightspace Core and related products. The most recent Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACR) of Brightspace Core and Creator+ are linked below:

These conformance reports are based on the latest VPAT 2.5 INT template published by the Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC) and contain three sections, showing:

  • conformance with WCAG 2.2 at Levels A, AA, and AAA,
  • compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, 1973 revised in 2017
  • compliance with the Harmonised European Standard EN 301 549 V3.2.1 (2021-03)

They also reflect compliance with the following regulations:

Accessibility Conformance Report is used as the de-facto tool for assessing the accessibility health of products during technology procurement. However, it is a point-in-time presentation of product accessibility status, and lacks context. Additional information is necessary about the supplier’s accessibility values and practices around the design and development of the product and the support they offer post procurement. As a longstanding member of 1EdTech, D2L uses their TrustEd AppsTM Accessibility Rubric to

  • highlight our efforts to prioritize accessibility and disability inclusion in our processes
  • demonstrate our commitment for continuous improvement of our product as part of our post-sale support

We offer D2L’s TrustEd AppsTM Accessibility Rubric along with our ACR. This helps educational institutions driven by the values of accessibility and inclusion in learning make informed procurement decisions. We also offer information about our accessibility processes in our HECVAT (Higher Education Community Vendor Assessment Toolkit) report when requested.

At D2L, we have a mature accessibility program. Our product process is closely guided by the most up-to-date accessibility standards—currently WCAG 2.2. When the World Wide Web consortium released the latest version of WCAG 2.2 on October 5, 2023, we published D2L’s Brightspace Core WCAG 2.2 ACR on the same day, showing full conformance with the new criteria on the date of release.

The accessible learning experiences we craft are founded on in-house technical expertise backed by lived experience of disability. We also involve a community of assistive technology users throughout our product process via our accessibility partner Fable. Our accessibility program is cross-functional, which means each team takes ownership for accessibility in their own work. Identified accessibility issues are raised as software defects with assigned priority levels based on severity of impact on users with disabilities. We take this approach because, at D2L, accessibility is a commitment to empower and engage individuals in their learning goals.
