Recently, our team had the privilege of volunteering for YMCA’s Y Artfelt Program, an arts and crafts initiative designed to help youth with special needs explore their creativity. Through this program, participants engage their hands and minds to create beautiful artworks, guided and supported by volunteers like us.

At D2L, we believe that everyone deserves access to high-quality education, regardless of age, ability, or location. That belief in inclusivity extends beyond the classroom and into our communities, which is why we were excited to take part in this meaningful activity.

Our role as volunteers was to befriend the Y Club LITE members and assist them with their art projects when needed. While that might sound simple, it was deeply rewarding. For many of us, the most memorable part wasn’t just helping with the crafts, but sharing conversations, encouragement, and laughter along the way. It was inspiring to see how each participant approached their project with creativity and enthusiasm, reminding us that learning and expression come in many forms.

Choosing Y Artfelt as our volunteer activity felt natural for us as a team. Creativity is at the heart of learning, and art provides a powerful way for individuals to express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others. Supporting youth with special needs in this space aligns closely with our mission at D2L, where we strive to design learning experiences that are engaging, inclusive, and empowering.

One of the most valuable takeaways from the experience was how much we learned ourselves. Volunteering gave us the chance to slow down, step outside of our usual workday routines, and connect with the community in a meaningful way. It reminded us that inclusivity isn’t just a principle, it’s an action we choose, whether in our workplace, our partnerships, or our volunteer efforts.

We’re grateful to YMCA for creating opportunities like Y Artfelt, and to the youth who welcomed us into their creative space with so much energy and openness.

As D2Lers, we look forward to continuing our efforts to make a positive impact and to transform the way the world learns.
