From Recall to Critical Analysis With H5P
With Simon Lolliot, Associate Professor of Teaching, Psychology Deptartment, H5P Award Winner

What can happen when open educational resources get a little more interactive?

Simon Lolliot, Associate Professor of Teaching in the University of British Columbia’s Department of Psychology, shares how H5P helped him add questions and activities to course materials after his colleague Kayli Johnson introduced him to the tool.

The goal was to help lower costs for students while making learning more engaging. Lolliot noticed that students started bringing more questions about analysis and critical understanding to office hours—and fewer about memorization. He also explains how interactive content can make learning feel more personal and help students prepare for class.

Lolliot and Johnson are H5P super users and H5P Award winners. Their work received the 2025 award for Impressive Use of Multimedia and the 2026 award for Outstanding Visual Design. Explore the 2025 H5P Awards and 2026 H5P Awards.

Key takeaways:

  • Adding H5P activities to open educational resources
  • Supporting student engagement and preparation before class
  • Encouraging deeper questions and critical understanding
  • Making learning more personal with interactive content

“H5P has allowed me to make offline content as close to as engaging as in-class content, in-person content.” — Simon Lolliot
