Try It as You Learn: Create Interactive Videos With H5P

What if an instructional video could teach you how to create interactive videos—and let you try each interaction as you go?

Kayli Johnson, Associate Professor of Teaching in the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Chemistry Department, and Simon Lolliot, Associate Professor of Teaching in UBC’s Department of Psychology, walk through an H5P video they created for educators.

Hotspots introduce different H5P content types, offer examples and tutorials, and let learners try activities such as fill-in-the-blank questions. Johnson and Lolliot also explain how to plan branching videos that respond to learners’ answers and address misconceptions.

Explore their interactive H5P video, a resource for educators getting started with interactive video. Johnson and Lolliot also won Outstanding Visual Design in the 2026 H5P Awards.

Key takeaways:

  • Exploring H5P content types through interactive examples
  • Creating videos with hotspots, questions and tutorials
  • Planning branching paths that respond to learner answers

“It [H5P.org] always steps you through just how to do it.” — Kayli Johnson
