University of Guelph rolls out Desire2Learn solution to entire campus, streamlining course development and delivery
Desire2Learn Incorporated (Desire2Learn), a leading provider of mission-critical enterprise eLearning solutions, announced today that the University of Guelph has expanded their use of the Desire2Learn enterprise eLearning solution as their Learning Management System (LMS) campus-wide.
The Desire2Learn platform has been in use with the Office of Open Learning since 2000. The enterprise eLearning solution will be extended to the entire university with a pilot of 31 on-campus courses in the Winter 2009 semester, with final phase-in to be completed by Summer 2009. By the end of the Fall 2009 semester, the University will be fully migrated to the Desire2Learn platform providing a single, consistent eLearning framework to more than 20,000 students.
While the University will see some hard dollar savings, the real cost savings will be in streamlining course development and delivery. Everyone will be learning on the same system and students, faculty, staff and administrators will use the Desire2Learn LMS in a more integrated manner. The University recognizes that students are extremely busy and that a common LMS offers streamlined administration – ‘the one place to look approach.’
Staff training, including Health & Safety and new software training, will also transition onto the Desire2Learn platform. The modular system approach will enable use of the product in different ways, providing flexibility to each specific situation. Of particular interest to Guelph is the customizable nature and forward-thinking approach of the Desire2Learn system including extension out into other services on campus, Web 2.0 and mobile services.
“Guelph has had wonderful successes with the Desire2Learn platform in its Open Learning and Continuing Education environment. The track record was there – a 225% increase in undergraduate online course enrolments in an eight year period; more than 540 face-to-face, hybrid, continuing and full distance education courses — so when it came time to extend the LMS and move to one campus-wide system, it was natural to turn to Desire2Learn,” said Mike Ridley, CIO, University of Guelph. “The Desire2Learn vision really aligns with what Guelph wants to do as well. We’re not just buying a product; we’re buying the philosophy of the company. We’re very comfortable with the Desire2Learn philosophy.”
“We are very excited about this initiative. The University of Guelph was our first customer and is our newest customer as well,” said John Baker, President & CEO, Desire2Learn. “We have had a great partnership with the Office of Open Learning over the past nine years, and now we will be expanding our interaction to include the entire campus. It is a great testament of the long-standing commitment we have to our clients. We look forward to continuing to meet Guelph’s institution-specific needs as they continue to grow.”
