San Joaquin Valley College Turns to Desire2Learn as Foundation of Outcome Based Educational Experience

Press Release

Leading Community College Replaces ANGEL with Desire2Learn Learning Suite

D2L Ltd. (“Desire2Learn”), a leader in providing innovative learning solutions, today announced San Joaquin Valley College (SJVC) is using Desire2Learn® Learning Suite to support its outcome-based instructional philosophy. The community college selected Desire2Learn to replace ANGEL.

SJVC has been providing outcome-oriented career education since 1977. To support the school’s focus and accreditation process, SJVC needed a learning environment that offered a high level of assessment for an outcome-based institution. After determining the outcomes that each learner should have when graduating from SJVC, the school needed to tie each outcome to every course offered – all the way down to the individual questions asked of learners. Desire2Learn Learning Suite was the only environment that provided the features to accomplish this critical requirement.

“We tested several learning environments by committee to get full buy-in from faculty, students and staff. Desire2Learn scored the highest likeability ratio out of all the technologies we tested. These scores, combined with the company’s long track record of success, made our decision easy,” said Adam LeFaive, Director of Information Management. “The conversion process was also critical for us. We had many legacy features and functions that we needed to keep for our courses. Desire2Learn was the only vendor that enabled us to maintain existing features while introducing a broad new range of functionality in a highly intuitive learning environment.”

Utilized across 12 campuses and for 1 online campus, SJVC currently has converted all courses into Desire2Learn Learning Environment. In addition, faculty and instructors can identify the specific learning outcomes achieved by each student.

“San Joaquin Valley College is an excellent example of an institution dedicated to improving student performance by assessing achievement related to specific outcomes,” said John Baker, President & CEO of the Desire2Learn family of companies. “The solution that we’ve developed with SJVC helps the institution reinforce its outcome-based philosophy by providing the students and faculty the tools needed to achieve and measure success.”
