eLearning Company, Desire2learn, Expands in ANZ With Acquisition, New Software, and New Customers

Press Release

Big data delivers predictive analytics to improve student performance and empower teachers

Desire2Learn Australia Pty Ltd. (Desire2Learn), the edtech company that created the world’s first truly integrated learning platform, has strengthened its presence in Australia with a fresh acquisition, an expanding team of over 30 people, and new customers. Underpinning this momentum is the release of its latest version of Desire2Learn Integrated Learning Platform, which introduces predictive analytics to educators – allowing teachers to better engage students, guide learning outcomes, and improve their own performance.

Featuring the Student Success System™ solution, an analytics engine that delivers fact-based and accurate insights on learning progress, the newest Desire2Learn Integrated Learning Platform release will improve student engagement and educator insight into each student’s learning path.

“Predictive analytics has transformed other industries, yet to date, it has been missing from education,” said John Baker, President and CEO, Desire2learn. “With this release, Desire2Learn is responding to a global demand for technologies that personalise and provide more adaptable learning experiences, which leads to better outcomes for students.”

In addition to the new release, Desire2Learn Ltd. has acquired Knowillage Systems Inc., an adaptive learning engine that leverages analytics to determine gaps in student skill sets and provide tools, content, and techniques to address areas of weakness. To complete the offering, Desire2Learn Learning Suite also includes Desire2Learn Binder™, a powerful mobile learning app, and Desire2Learn ePortfolio, an interactive resume that allows students to develop rich portfolios and build on them after they graduate.

Mr. Baker commented, “Over the last eighteen months, we’ve seen a surge in the take up of analytics, mobile, and other innovative technologies in the education sector locally. Educators are looking for new ways to engage, personalize and drive high-quality education. Analytics is playing an important role in this advancement: helping to provide insights for learners and educators to keep learners on track for better outcomes.

Taking advantage of the latest technology will be one of Desire2Learn’s recent customers – Brighton Grammar School, a leading boys’ school based in Melbourne. Cameron Taylor, Co-ordinator e-Learning at Brighton Grammar, said, “Desire2Learn is making it easy for schools to meet one of their major current objectives: to provide students, teachers, and families with better data about student performance. In addition, it’s heightening teacher transparency and accountability and boosting a teacher’s ability to identify students who require extra guidance.

“We’ve received fantastic feedback from both parents and teachers, in such a short time. Most importantly, though, the school has seen just how powerful eLearning technology can be – allowing us to save time, improve services and move to the forefront of the industry in terms of how we manage delivery of our academia and the success of our students.”

More than 750 institutions participated in the creation of the newest version of Desire2Learn Learning Suite and there are currently more than 10 million users of Desire2Learn solutions.

Powerful New Benefits for Teachers, Students and Organisations:

Teachers and organisations gain deeper insights

Student Success System™: Building on its acquisition of the Degree Compass™ solution three months ago, Desire2Learn continues to incorporate predictive analytics into education. Degree Compass uses predictive analytics to help students optimise their course selection, and the new Desire2Learn Student Success System™ helps instructors lift outcomes by anticipating students’ challenges and progress.

The Student Success System provides instructors with rich, predictive data visualisations that compare and contrast at-risk students with their peers, detects overall course risks, and monitors a student’s progress. Real-time insight into a student’s capabilities, peer dynamics and learning trends enable institutions to check potential outcomes and engagement and assessment data to anticipate issues and adapt guidance accordingly.

Students will be more engaged and teachers will be more productive

Desire2Learn Binder™: The Desire2Learn Binder mobile app offers students the option of using their tablet to consume content, providing greater opportunities to personalise their learning experience. This latest release introduces Dropbox.com and Microsoft® SkyDrive® integration, enabling Binder users to engage with all types of learning resources in a way that is familiar to them while also supporting their increasingly busy lifestyles.

Seamless Discussions Experience: To promote engaging learning experiences, the updated Discussions tool encourages students to engage in dialogue by providing a more natural and fluid user experience. Students can collaborate directly from their course content without needing to switch applications, view a topic from within a discussion to help them understand how they are being assessed, or easily send an email or page to a classmate by simply hovering over a user’s profile.

Optimised Content Experience: Recognising that a significant amount of time is spent on developing course content and grading assignments, this update offers options to save time on day-to-day tasks. The introduction of HTML templates provides teachers with rich, pre-defined templates to choose from when creating new course resources, allowing them to focus on the content, not the presentation. The Desire2Learn content templates are designed to meet accessibility and mobility best practices to help instructors meet and exceed the requirements for students of all types (for example, supporting screen readers and other assistive technology), on any device. The process of grading and providing feedback on assignment submissions has also been significantly streamlined via new offline grading enhancements made to the Desire2Learn Dropbox tool, including simplified assignment mark-up capabilities.

Students receive employment support

ePortfolio for Life: Employers today are more interested in understanding what students have accomplished, not just the degree they have attained. With ePortfolio and myDesire2Learn™, graduates can now continue to develop rich portfolios and build on them after school. Students can move their existing school content and personal artifacts, such as learning experiences and achievements, to the cloud so they can take their ePortfolio with them after graduation, like an interactive resume. All students receive 2 GB of free storage with myDesire2Learn.
