Employee-driven initiatives provide much needed assistance locally and worldwide
The Desire2Learn Incorporated (Desire2Learn), Active Care Team In Our Neighbourhood (ACTION) committee, now in its sixth year of operations, strives to give back to the community in very tangible ways. During 2010, employees have dug deep into their pockets and hearts donating tens of thousands of dollars to local and global charities.
Activities included supporting the Canadian Cancer Society, National Service Dogs, and Send’em Off Smiling – to name but a few. Additionally, ACTION has run a variety of initiatives throughout the year that have sponsored employees participating in various charitable events. Desire2Learn has provided matching funds.
“We take on a number of activities to drive a spirit of giving back to our community: running fundraisers, highlighting volunteer opportunities, and supporting employee fundraising initiatives,” says Jenny Hill, ACTION Chair. “This year was unprecedented for ACTION and Desire2Learn in terms of fundraising and employee involvement. The committee was blown away by the energy and generosity of the staff. Desire2Learn’s support of the ACTION committee has been amazing as well; the committee was given additional funding to help support some incredible employee initiatives like ‘Pie in the Face for Phil’.”
“I cannot express the gratitude I feel to everyone that has donated to help give our children the essentials they need for back to school. I feel like a weight has been lifted. Our seven year old daughter is so excited. You’d think it was Christmas morning. Thank you for your generosity.”

Hill continues, “We’re committed to supporting charities locally and worldwide that our employees care deeply about. By giving of our time and money to the organizations we are passionate about, we help to achieve Desire2Learn’s mission of improving human potential globally.”
ACTION committee support focuses on:
- Programs that enhance science, math and technology skills for students at any level of education;
- Programs that enhance the well-being of families and children; and
- Organizations that are of personal significance to Desire2Learn employees.
“We are fortunate to live in a relatively prosperous and caring community. It can be shocking to realize, however, that one in five children in our Region actually live below the poverty line,” states Lisa Thompson, Board member, Workplace Programs. “Our goal at Send’em Off Smiling is to link the resources of our caring community with the children in most need – to give these children a chance at a better future. It is only with the involvement of organizations like Desire2Learn that we were able to help over 1200 children this year. Teachers attest to the difference that the program makes in the attitude of these children. It’s wonderful to know that such a small thing can make such a big difference!”
Dozens of events and activities spanned the twelve months of 2010 with funds, food, clothing or time being donated to both local and more far reaching organizations, including: Junior Achievement, Family and Children’s Services of Waterloo Region’s ‘Adopt a Family Holiday Program,’ Food Bank of Waterloo Region, United Way, Cancer Relay for Life, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Movember Foundation, Breakfast for Learning, as well as Lupus Canada, World Vision, and Haiti Relief Efforts.
“Desire2Learn employees truly exhibit what it means to be active, engaged members of society giving generously to the organizations, initiatives and events of the communities in which they reside and work,” states John Baker, President & CEO, Desire2Learn. “They are dedicated and committed to the community at large not just during the holiday season but throughout the year.”
2011 activities are already in the planning stage and will continue employee and company commitment to supporting communities and organizations both locally and globally.
