Desire2Learn First to Attain IMS Common Cartridge Compliance for Learning Management Systems

Press Release

Desire2Learn Learning Environment leads the way in attaining Common Cartridge certification, increasing opportunities for instructors and publishers

Desire2Learn Incorporated (Desire2Learn), a leading provider of mission-critical enterprise eLearning solutions, today announced their attainment of certified conformance for the IMS Common Cartridge Standard v1.0 on the Desire2Learn® Learning Management System (LMS).

IMS Common Cartridge is a set of open standards, freely available and without royalty, developed by a global industry consortium with over 150 members. These standards, if followed by content developers and learning platforms, enable strict interoperability between content and systems. They also support great flexibility in the type of digital content supported and where such content is located.

According to Dr. Rob Abel, Chief Executive, IMS Global Learning Consortium, “Leading institutions, systems and virtual schools are eager to realize the benefits of Common Cartridge in enabling a new era of digital learning content. By achieving official conformance from IMS, Desire2Learn is showing strong leadership in making these benefits available to their customers, including the groundbreaking Digital Learning Connection program.”

With this conformance, content and assessments packaged according to the Common Cartridge standard can be easily incorporated into systems using the Desire2Learn course management platform.

As more and more publishers and content providers adopt the Common Cartridge standard, instructors will have access to an increasing amount of material that will be able to be imported into their courses. The Desire2Learn commitment and conformance to this standard gives publishers confidence to create materials and package libraries in this format knowing that there are market-leading LMSs that will be able to incorporate it.

Common Cartridge Benefits include:

  • Greater choice of content: Enables collections of learning resources of various types and sources.
  • Reduces vendor/platform lock-in: Establishes course cartridge native formats endorsed by educational publishers, and supports a wide variety of established content formats, eliminating platform lock-in.
  • Greater assessment options: Explicitly supports the most widely used standards for exchanging assessment items.
  • Increases flexibility, sharing and reuse: Fits within the educational context of enabling instructors to assemble lesson plans of various resources and publish those as reusable and changeable packages that are easy to create, share, and improve.

“We are very excited about attaining Common Cartridge compliance with our latest product version which builds upon the support begun with the Desire2Learn Learning Environment 8.4. Our Common Cartridge certification positions us well with publishers looking to implement the standard, and enables us to demonstrate and work with early adopters,” stated Jeremy Auger, COO, Desire2Learn and member IMS Board of Directors. “We have indicated our support for the Common Cartridge standard from the outset and remain committed to not only meeting client needs for interoperability but to also taking a leadership position.”
