Desire2Learn ACTION Committee has Another Banner Year for Charitable Involvement

Press Release

Desire2Learn employees show tremendous dedication to assisting local and global communities

The Desire2Learn Incorporated (“Desire2Learn”) Active Care Team In Our Neighbourhood (ACTION) Committee has increased community involvement and has had another busy and successful year. The committee is now in its seventh year of operation and still maintains its primary objective of actively giving back to the communities in which the company conducts business.

The committee works toward enhancing communities by organizing charity fundraisers, working with community groups to provide funding for projects, and by providing sponsorship to employees and their family members who participate in charitable events.

ACTION Committee focuses on:

  • Programs that enhance science, math and technology skills for students at any level of education;
  • Programs that enhance the well-being of families and children; and
  • Organizations that are of personal significance to Desire2Learn employees.

This year’s activities had Desire2Learn employees showing their support in various ways, whether they were running or walking in the Great Strides event for Cystic Fibrosis Canada, growing mustaches and raising funds for prostate cancer research through the Movember campaign, or donating blood through the many Canadian Blood Services clinics.

Mike Denomme, an active Desire2Learn ACTION member, with the help of his Deno’s Dream Team, became the top fundraising team in Canada and raised over $40,000 in May for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. ACTION sponsored a number of Desire2Learn employees to participate in the Cystic Fibrosis event.

During the month of November, a Desire2Learn employee created a team, Desire2Mo, and the team grew quickly. Sixty six Desire2Learn employees signed up to be a part of the team to help raise awareness and money to support prostate cancer research. By initiating events such as a Pulled Pork Day and the Wheel of Mo, through their combined efforts they were able to raise just under $11,000.

Additionally, Desire2Learn’s ACTION Committee has worked with Desire2Learn employees to support a number of charities, including:

  • Canadian Cancer Society
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • Christa’s Angels
  • National Service Dogs
  • Red Cross in support of Japan Relief
  • Cystic Fibrosis Canada
  • Junior Achievement
  • Local food banks, youth shelters, toy drives and library programs

After seeing the final numbers for Great Strides and the Movember initiative, as well as what the ACTION Committee has planned for the remainder of the year, Desire2Learn will have donated over tens of thousands of dollars to charitable organizations through ACTION Committee fundraisers and some incredible Desire2Learn employee driven initiatives.

“Desire2Learn employees demonstrate outstanding commitment and dedication in helping the community throughout the year,” states John Baker, President and CEO, Desire2Learn. “Year over year, they have proven to be active and engaged members of society and it has become a part of the culture at Desire2Learn.”

ACTION Committee is already in the planning stage for 2012 and will continue its dedication and commitment to support the communities and organizations both locally and globally.
