Desire2Learn Acquires Captual Technologies Inc. to Offer Presentation Capture and Webcasting Solutions

Desire2Learn expands its standalone or integrated platform offerings enabling rich media presentations to be captured and streamed with options for cloud-based hosting

Desire2Learn Incorporated (Desire2Learn), a leading provider of enterprise teaching and learning platforms, today announced the acquisition of Captual Technologies Inc., makers of ePresence.

The acquisition enables Desire2Learn to provide a complete presentation capture and webcasting solution for rich media presentations live or on-demand with options for cloud-based hosting. The ePresence product will become Desire2Learn’s sixth standalone product platform, and be known as Desire2Learn Capture.

Desire2Learn Capture offers innovation to meet the growing needs of clients, including continued support for integrations with open source applications, other commercial learning management systems (LMSs) and portals.

Used globally by leading institutions, hospitals, and businesses, Desire2Learn Capture is designed to fit a variety of web production scenarios – from personal webcasting to fully-automated room deployment. Rich media presentations can be captured and the synchronized content shared with viewers as a live and/or on-demand webcast. Presentations can include video, slides, screen and peripheral sharing, incorporate digital whiteboards and document cameras, as well as viewer chats and comments. This highly scalable solution allows for greater collaboration and focus, enabling persistent access to rich media.

Current clients include University of British Columbia (UBC) Interprofessional Continuing Education; National Institutes of Health Informatics (NIHI); School of Medicine, Flinders University; Institute for Life Course and Aging, University of Toronto and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).

The two companies have a lot in common and have a shared vision for future innovations that will help clients succeed. The entire Captual/ePresence team will join Desire2Learn forming and leading the new Desire2Learn Webcasting Solutions team.

“The Captual group is very excited to be joining the Desire2Learn team,” says Peter Wolf, Director, Webcasting Products, Desire2Learn and former CEO, Captual Technologies Inc. “We have found a great cultural fit, aligned values, and a mutual quest to transform how we educate and inform.”

“We are extremely pleased to be extending Desire2Learn product offerings to include Captual’s innovative platform,” states John Baker, President & CEO, Desire2Learn. “It’s been clear in our conversations with clients that really easy-to-use webcasting offers significant value for organizations and presenters. We see this growing as organizations look for cost-effective ways to share learning experiences and break down barriers to education and training.”
