D2L Enables LTSA to Transform Professional Development for Jobs in 21st-Century Libraries

Press Release

Library training services provider to deploy Brightspace to align learning to the digital information era

D2L, the global learning technology leader, today announced that Library Training Services Australia (LTSA) is deploying the Brightspace professional development system as a fundamental component of its transformation to foster 21st-century digital libraries and information hubs.

LTSA is Australia’s only private provider of library training services. It delivers to its students high-quality and flexible education in library and information services to support, empower and inspire library staff and professionals to deliver value to their communities in a rapidly evolving sector.

Twenty-first century library and information services need 21st century skills and knowledgeable library workers who can help transition their libraries through the fourth industrial revolution, and ensure that they and their libraries remain relevant to their communities so that no-one is left behind.

As a result, LTSA recently initiated a five-phase strategy to evolve the way it provides training as libraries continue to become less about just books, and more about information and collaboration spaces that combine the physical and digital knowledge. With the first two phases – comprising an overhaul in the way content is developed and delivered to students – completed, it commenced the third stage to find a system that could align to the evolving industry in which it operates.

Following a competitive evaluation against other Learning Management System (LMS) vendors, LTSA selected Brightspace because it is easy to understand and use, has extensive interactive capabilities, and offers powerful mobile capabilities so that students can learn at their convenience. Importantly, it can deliver these capabilities within a customisable digital environment that moulds to the unique preferences of every student in Australia and abroad. Brightspace also helps facilitate efficient and effective administration processes around student management and assessment that helps LTSA deploy its resources to ensure better customer and student experiences, with a more human touch.

“Traditionally, accredited training in Australia has focused on units of competency, qualifications and sometimes skillsets,” said Maciek Fibrich, Director at LTSA. “But the challenge is that existing nationally-recognised courses are typically delivered and tested on paper  students complete assessments and attend tests on site. This model is no longer relevant and does not fit into the versatile digital landscape to which we are now exposed and have become accustomed.”

“At LTSA, we see the onboarding of D2L Brightspace as a mechanism that will allow us to produce accreditation in a more meaningful way  one that allows students to learn in a way more suited to their hectic lifestyles, and also to the 21st-century libraries we are seeing develop, while also delivering other value-add educational services and experiences. We also see Brightspace as a long-term solution that will allow us to extend our training services to more students than ever before, to reach areas we haven’t been able to reach effectively before – especially regional areas  and to scale our services to students around the world.”

With Brightspace, LTSA will be able to deliver macro- and micro-degrees that incorporate ebooks and audio books, but also emerging industries such as virtual and augmented reality. For example, students will be able to use VR headsets to explore locations around the world without physically attending them, and leverage these experiences to better advise visitors. This will, in turn, fulfil LTSA’s objective of reshaping public perception of the role of libraries in the digitally driven world.

Brightspace will also deliver various internal benefits to LTSA  it is expected to streamline and accelerate workflows, ensure trainer/teacher development, and reduce administration time, which can be reinvested in boosting outcomes for students.

“Brightspace provides LTSA with an environment that integrates with existing systems and its reworked training programs to optimise outcomes for students,” said Geoff Thomas, Vice-President Asia-Pacific and Japan at D2L. “By focusing on the individual requirements of its students and eliminating geographic boundaries from training, LTSA will help create a generation of paraprofessional library workers, with the skills to deliver information to their community and the global community through digital and traditional resources.”
