Adoption of Desire2Learn Key Enabler for Mohawk College Vision

Desire2Learn tools and functionality facilitates Mohawk College commitment to blended learning experiences for 20,000 courses and 10,500 students

Desire2Learn Incorporated (“Desire2Learn”), a leading provider of mission-critical enterprise learning solutions, today announced Mohawk College’s five-year contract and migration to the Desire2Learn Learning Suite.

“Mohawk College has a renewed and energetic commitment to providing education through blended learning experiences, and our recent adoption of the Desire2Learn Learning Environment is a key enabler of that vision,” says Andrew Connery, Centre for Teaching & Learning, Mohawk College. “With Desire2Learn replacing all other systems in use at Mohawk, a new emphasis on quality learning frameworks and sustainability, new online training resources, and the rich complement of tools and functionality provided by the Desire2Learn platform, we will be able to meet that commitment and provide the best learning opportunities for our students.”

Beginning with the successful integration with the Student Information System (SIS) in November 2009, Mohawk turned to migrating all faculty, staff and students onto the Desire2Learn platform. Representing a full-time equivalent (FTE) of 10,500 students and 20,000 courses (including fully online, blended and supplemental), the migration was completed for the Fall 2010 semester. “eLearn at Mohawk” (eLearn) operates over four major campuses located in Southwestern Ontario.

The whole Learning Management System (LMS) review process was extremely thorough and was conducted over an 18 month period. Everything from current usage, future needs and the state of arts in education were considered during the hands-on review. At the end of that process, Desire2Learn came out the clear leader with the platform being described as “intuitive, robust, powerful, easy-to-use, and the most cost-effective.”

The institutional move to blended learning is the backdrop to implementation of both Desire2Learn Learning Repository followed by Desire2Learn ePortfolio — a component that is viewed as part of a very important long-term environment for both faculty and students. Connery remarks, “We can do a lot more because it is so easy. Everyone is looking for that and Desire2Learn delivers on it!”

During the migration, Help Desk usage was minimal. Students have helped drive the momentum to get all courses on the platform; they have been a real source of the interest in the campus-wide implementation.

“We’re very pleased with the integration process at Mohawk and to be partnering with them on their migration to Desire2Learn Learning Suite,” states John Baker, President & CEO, Desire2Learn. “Their long-term commitment, including a hosted environment, demonstrates the level of trust and faith they have placed in us.”

“The whole process starts and ends with customer service  making the organization feel that they truly are a partner,” indicates Connery. “It’s the whole package that is offered that is key. We’re well over a year into it with Desire2Learn and the integration was the highlight! We were incredibly well looked after throughout the process. There was a sense of being connected to people rather than just a company; that sets Desire2Learn apart; it’s very different.”
