D2L, the global learning technology leader, has announced that the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), has chosen the Brightspace platform to enable new learning models and further the sharing of information, research and techniques around blood and bone marrow diseases.
EBMT is a leading medical-scientific association dedicated to the promotion of all knowledge associated with bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapy. With core units in Spain, the Netherlands, UK and France, EBMT’s 6,000 members include doctors, physicians, nurses, pharmacists and data managers, working across 560 European hospitals. Its mission is to save the lives of patients with blood cancers and other life-threatening diseases by advancing the field of blood and marrow transplantation and cell therapy worldwide through science, education and patient care.
EBMT’s goal is to provide a single platform for doctors, scientists and other practitioners in the field that enables collaboration and experience sharing, as well as assisting in the training of future health professionals. To date, specialised training has been face-to-face, with one large congress and around 20 small training courses throughout the year, based at smaller educational avenues or academies. However, this approach proved to be time-restrictive and not scalable, thereby limiting learners’ progression throughout their research and studies.
EBMT wanted to add another dynamic to members’ training and study, and to give learners more information and more training courses online with clearer goals and milestones to mark their progress. The Brightspace platform was chosen due to its functionality, easy implementation and flexibility.
“Brightspace offers us a straightforward digital solution to better train our members and enable doctors and nurses to learn remotely in a way that fits around their busy schedules. Our membership is diverse, ranging from doctors to data managers to nurses and everything in between, so the individualised learning paths and real-time data-analytics, where each user’s progress can be individually tracked and monitored ensure no one gets left behind. We feel that D2L really understands our needs, and offers us a tailored, holistic and complete solution” said Andreu Gusi, Executive Director, EBMT.
“As an online platform, Brightspace can enable easier access to these course materials for learners. With Brightspace we can better equip our members with all the latest information on the transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells, as well as clinical research, education, standardisation, quality control and accreditation” said Gusi.
EBMT will be launching the Brightspace platform in October 2019 to assist the online editorial community of doctors, physicians and nurses. Learners will be able to select topics by stakeholders, with all training being completed through online webinars and the platform. It will also be used to train all 500 EBMT data managers in Europe.
“D2L is thrilled to work with EBMT and assist in the furthering of the science and medical research that has the potential to save lives. We will continue our shared goals in creating a more engaging, innovative learning model for all and are proud to be considered a part of EBMT’s global mission,” said Elliot Gowans, senior VP International, D2L.
- By November 2019, the Brightspace platform will provide course materials for the training of doctors and nurses as part of an international learning programme
- All users will learn the procedure of bone marrow transplant, as well as quality control and accreditation necessary for transplant procedures
- The Brightspace platform will provide flexible learning, enabling users to complete courses around their work and everyday lives
ABOUT EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR BLOOD AND MARROW TRANSPLANTATION (EBMT)
The European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) is a not-for profit medical and scientific organisation established in 1974. It is dedicated to fighting life-threatening blood cancers and diseases and improving patients’ lives. The EBMT Members – more than 4,500 physicians, nurses, scientists and other healthcare professionals – participate in a unique collaborative network of peers involved in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and cellular therapy research.
The EBMT patient Registry was established in the early 1970’s. It is the only data source of its kind in Europe. The data are submitted continuously by more than 550 centres, including from outside Europe. The Registry holds data on more than 650,000 HSCT procedures including details on disease, transplant type, donor type and stem cell source. It contains data on patients that have undergone HSCT and also on patients receiving immunosuppressive therapies or other cell therapies. The Registry also offers the possibility to enter donors’ follow-up data, which is crucial to ensure maximum donor safety. The Registry underpins extensive European research that translates into changes in clinical practice and improvements in patient outcome and care.
