On 29 October, D2L is hosting a webinar with the Fosway Group, Europe’s #1 HR industry analyst, on the topic of Getting beyond content to create continuous learning experiences that work.

David Perring, Fosway Group’s director of research, and Alan Hiddleston, account director and programmatic learning expert at D2L Europe, will consider how enterprises can create continuous, action-based development programmes that harness a variety of content types.

They will cover:

Ahead of the webinar, we caught up with Alan to get an idea of what webinar attendees can expect. We began by asking what makes a great learning experience?

Alan: “Great experiences result when learners are engaged and motivated and when learning content, together with the way it’s delivered, supports them in gaining the skills they need. A successful outcome is when those skills help individuals – and the organisation – meet their objectives.”

What should enterprises consider when designing learning programmes?

A: “It’s important to consider the type of workplace learning that’s needed. Generally, there are two. The first builds technical skills: think security training or compliance. For this type of learning, they need to provide the right content in an engaging way, which learners can easily access, whenever suits them, wherever they are. A good experience to think of is the one you get when using the YouTube platform – video and multimedia are useful ways to give a clear demonstration of how to do something. Digital learning content that can be accessed from a range of devices gives employees a quick and uncomplicated way of gaining skills rapidly.

“The second type of training is skills development: leadership, communication, customer service and so on; sometimes referred to as the ‘soft skills.’ The need for these has steadily grown, not least because technology has changed how we work and the roles we perform. Administrative and other manual tasks are increasingly automated. Employees who used to perform those roles are now being called upon to bring value through capabilities that computers lack – interactivity, communication, adaptability, critical thinking, creativity and so on.

“Meeting this need requires programmatic learning that enables employees to learn over time and that supports them in applying learning, demonstrating skills, gathering feedback and taking their learning forward.

“It should also enable the organisation to tap into its existing knowledge by giving subject matter experts, coaches and mentors the tools to provide content, interact with learners and continually evolve the learning experience as needs change.”

How can enterprises provide the right learning experience for all training needs?

A: “A learning solution should provide four things: the tools to create and run courses, the means for collaboration and social interaction, continual motivation, and the ability to apply learning and get feedback. These things are particularly important for programmatic learning.

“Also, as learning is now undertaken on an ongoing basis – often at work and other locations instead of face-to-face training centres – enterprises need a solution that enables them to check understanding. After all, trainers used to be able to see if learners were focused, motivated and engaged. Digital learning that supports quizzes, discussion groups, friendly competition, rewards, virtual collaboration and more, provides the tools for engagement and measurement.”

How can enterprises ensure programmes deliver learning outcomes?

A: “The way we learn has changed. Employees respond to learning programmes that are digital, intuitive and that deliver content in a way that is familiar to them, in a format that’s convenient whenever and wherever they access it.

“A modern learning platform should support enterprises in building courses with the right type of content and delivery to meet each particular training need. That means the building of technical skills through a range of media and the delivery of programmatic learning that motivates and enables learners to collaborate and apply, demonstrate and receive feedback on their progress.”
