If you’ve ever done any public speaking, you know it can be nerve-wracking. Lots of us get nervous at the thought of a room full of people, looking up at us, waiting to hear what we have to say.
I can honestly say that when I was backstage at our Fusion 2018 conference, waiting to go onstage for my keynote speech, I wasn’t one bit nervous. I was excited. Pumped. Completely prepared.
All around me there were D2L staff taking care of all the technical and organizational details that make an event run smoothly. Even in the dark, I could tell they were a well-oiled machine — everybody had a job to do and was incredibly focused. In fact, it had been that way all week — our staff did a tremendous job of putting on an event that was fun, informative and filled with great discussions and networking.
That gave me the confidence I needed.
In the days leading up to that moment, I had been having amazing conversations with our customers from all over the world. And you’re more than customers — you’re our partners in this work. That was evident as we talked about education, business, learning and — yes — our products, too. And what I appreciated most was the honest and thoughtful feedback I heard — some of which made its way into the speech, and all of which will inform our work at D2L in the days ahead.
That gave me the inspiration I needed.
And then — standing backstage — I heard the crowd. I could feel the excitement building — and while I’d love to think it was because I was going to be speaking, I know it was ACTUALLY because it was one more great opportunity to talk about the mission that unites us all: learning. There is nothing like speaking to a group of passionate, energetic, professional educators about the big issues in learning.
That gave me the energy I needed.
So, I guess what I want to say, is thank you.
Thanks to our team of amazing D2L professionals who put on a fantastic event. Thanks to our customers — whether you were at Fusion or not — for inspiring our work. And thanks to all of you who help the world learn — your energy is changing lives for the better, including mine.
