Technology and Creativity-Focused Abertay University Finds Natural Partnership With D2L’s Brightspace

Press Release

D2L, the global learning technology leader, today announced that Abertay University has chosen D2L’s Brightspace platform to deliver a more personalised and engaging learning experience to its students.

Abertay University has a long history as a hub of technology education and innovation. The institution was founded in 1888 as Dundee Institute of Technology and gained university status in 1994. Over the last 25 years, it has led the way in preparing students for modern careers in emerging creative and technology-focused industries. In 1997, Abertay was the first university to launch a computer games degree, and in 2006 it was the first to introduce an Ethical Hacking degree.

D2L will help Abertay to integrate more engaging learning experiences such as gamification into its courses, support more collaborative learning and harness learning analytics to measure the successes of its various programmes and courses.

“Given our highly creative and technical focus, many of our students are a different breed compared with most other universities’. They’re technologically saavy, hands-on creative thinkers and are not typically engaged by traditional teaching models. To better serve their needs and expectations, we needed to create more interactive and personalised learning experiences, and that meant a complete rethink of our learning platform,”said Dr Alastair Robertson, Director of Teaching and Learning Enhancement at Abertay University.

Abertay recognised that D2L’s Brightspace platform could support its strategic ambitions to provide a richer, more engaging learning experience through a more accessible VLE with rich in-built functionality. In 2013, D2L worked with a technical institution in Canada (Lambton College) to develop the one of the world’s first truly integrated game-based learning engine in Brightspace. This served as a valuable proof-point when Abertay was looking for a new learning platform.

“D2L has a proven track record of delivering unique, interactive and engaging learning experiences through Brightspace. We’re looking forward to integrating these new experiences into our 60 taught programmes and almost 600 modules in exciting, innovative ways,” said Dr Robertson.

“It was clear from the outset there was a great fit between Abertay and D2L,” said Elliot Gowans, Senior VP International, D2L. “We not only have the technology to support Abertay with its goals, but there’s also a synergy and shared ethos between us. Abertay is innovative, isn’t afraid of trying new approaches to create unique learning experiences and, like D2L, they see technology as a key driver of the overall student experience. I’m delighted D2L has the opportunity to be part of the future of Abertay University.”
