Personalised learning has become a buzz term in recent years, but in reality, it isn’t new. Teachers have dedicated countless hours tailoring instruction to meet the needs of all students. Personalisation has always been a goal, but in the past it was more difficult to achieve. Today, with the advent of new technological tools, many teachers are able to achieve it more easily, and therefore, are ready to embrace it wholeheartedly with their students.
Personalised learning isn’t new, but the tech is
With an individualised approach, teachers can really empower students. It provides them with options and gives them a voice in their learning. Students meet milestones at different times. Some students will excel in one subject and struggle in another. Personalised learning allows students to achieve goals according to their learning style and at their own pace. This might seem like an overwhelming undertaking to accomplish with only one teacher and many students. However, with the use of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), it can be done efficiently and effectively benefiting both teachers and students.
How the tools help deliver individualised teaching
Technology and a blended learning program allows teachers to create content, develop remedial as well as enrichment activities, and deliver it on an individual needs basis. A VLE is an ideal ecosystem for this to take place and teachers are at an advantage if their schools have one in place. A VLE provides teachers with a platform to create and store content that can be delivered in a customised way to individual students. Using features like conditional release, teachers can set parameters around performance. Once these are in place, content can be delivered in a personalised way according to students’ needs. Teachers can store, reuse, and revise these lessons / activities in order for them to work smarter not harder. With an efficient, adaptable platform in place, teachers can spend more time as facilitators and less time as sage on the stage.

As a teacher reflecting on personalised learning, I see the possibility for students to achieve the skills needed to succeed. Personalised learning allows students to take ownership of learning and encourages them to take risks. In turn, teachers can give students more choice and the opportunity to discover their passions and interests. Personalised learning means recognising that learning doesn’t happen in the same way for everyone and celebrating how we reach students and their differences uniquely.
