How do you Measure Learning?

This year at the ATD International Conference and Expo, D2L came in with a focus on learning success and measurement.  We shared our thoughts and had some healthy discussion in our breakout session Creating and Measuring the Effectiveness of your Blended Programs. And while the session led to some great discussion we hoped to learn more from the conference attendees by hosting various surveys at our booth in the exhibit hall.

For those in attendance, you may recall our visual survey (shown in progress below) where we asked attendees “How are you primarily measuring success in your learning programs?”

Evaluation Forms

Kirkpatrick’s level 1 maintained its popularity with 49% of attendees sharing that they used evaluation forms to gather feedback on learning programs.  Attendees indicated that they struggle to move beyond “smile sheets” in their evaluation due to various constraints.  The perception that higher level evaluations are difficult to do and resource intensive was a recurring theme in both our session discussions and at the booth.  Planning ahead for measurement in line with stakeholder expectations was discussed as a way to ensure measurement can move towards business outcomes.

Program Usage

34% of respondents stated that the success of their programs was primarily measured by how many learners attended training or used online courses.  These measures are key to ensuring that training is getting out to learners and can form a basis for measurement.  Attendees again indicated that they wanted to move beyond usage statistics to look at application on the job and business outcome results.   In our ATD breakout session we shared the sales onboarding approach D2L uses internally and how we link program back to sales success.

Employee Engagement and Productivity

In our survey, we found 17% of the people we spoke to used employee engagement and productivity as their primary measure of success in their learning programs.  While this can be the most difficult to assess, measuring behavior change on the job helps to inform organizations about the value of their learning programs and their impact on business results.  In our session, we spoke with attendees about strategies to get to this level of measurement.
