How does your association define “engaged” when it comes to your members? When you say someone is “very engaged”, what do you mean by that? Think about other words you may use to describe them—active, responsive, enthusiastic.
In our earlier posts, we looked at four learner experience models you can use to help drive member engagement with continuing education and how aligning your learning strategy to your association’s mission can help drive growth.
Here, we look at three tools you can leverage to help you engage your members and promote association excellence around the globe.
1. Content Tools
Content can play a mission-critical role in the success of your association’s virtual training programs. While features like game-based learning can add a boost to training and make it extra motivating, the content is one of the big things that can keep learners around over the long term. You want to make sure it’s relevant and serves members’ real-world needs. It should also be structured and set up in a way that’s going to make it easy for them to access.
Here are three common content types you can explore:
- Long-Form Content (6 minutes–1 hour): Think short webinars rather than tiny, 60-second videos that keep people tuned into what you’re talking about.
- Low-Stakes Content: You won’t have any certification exams or major projects with this type of content. Typically, the focus is more on the amount of time learners spend on content.
- High-Stakes Content: These types of modules will usually involve an exam or some type of formal knowledge check. The best practice here is to keep people engaged by doing what instructional designers refer to as “chunking the content.” This means breaking lessons down into smaller pieces with mini-quizzes or activities between sections where people can apply the skills or knowledge they’ve learned. Typically, each piece should be 5–7 minutes long.
On top of how you want to organize the content, consider the types of materials you want to include. You may be able to add webinar or presentation recordings or post resource materials as a bonus to entice members and help them develop their skills.
You can use your learning management system (LMS) to make regular association-wide announcements about upcoming events, changes, and updates. Announcements can go out to everyone, or you can share them with a select group of people. For example, if you were launching a new leadership course, you could let everyone know via a newsletter, but you could also send targeted notifications to members who had previously completed courses on the same or related topics.
3. Virtual Classrooms
Virtual classrooms can give learners space to develop and practice durable skills using video content. They’re especially well-suited for conferences using digital conference of hybrid/blended models. They can allow learners and instructors to meet live and interact with each other in real time. Plus, everything can be tracked and recorded, so it will be available on demand for learners to revisit later.
