Put skills and knowledge to action with Brightspace Video Assignments

There are significant gaps between the skills workers possess and what employers expect from them. In fact, only 50% of hiring managers think grads are well-prepared for the workforce. Educational institutions aim to prepare their students for the future by developing skills they need to be successful. To achieve this goal it is important to consider the context in which individuals develop and prove competency.

Think of it like this, did you learn how to ride a bike by explaining the process in an essay? No, you learn a skill through repeated practice and real-world experience. So, why don’t we approach all skill development in the same way? In order to close the current skills gap, individuals need skill-building opportunities and timely feedback to help them improve, but these practices have been difficult to scale using traditional methods.

It’s time to assess competency through a new lens. Provide a safe space for individuals to develop new skills, or to demonstrate their mastery of them with the individual project assignment within Brightspace. This workflow couples repeated skill practice with feedback activities like self-assessment and peer review to maximise growth.

In question and answer, individuals articulate or apply their knowledge on the spot within a limited time frame. The spontaneous nature of these responses gives evaluators more insight into their learners thought process and helps produce the most authentic representation of comprehension.

In interactive video, individuals answer questions at different points throughout a video, but this activity tests more than just retention and recall. Video response prompts also help individuals develop communication and critical thinking skills as they observe, analyse, and report to real-world scenarios. Group project helps create a social learning community by having individuals engage and collaborate with their peers. These interactions can occur asynchronously or in real-time through learner-driven sessions in the integrated virtual classroom tool.

Putting skills and knowledge into action matters, but individuals also need targeted feedback to improve over time. After users complete a video assignment, they can receive personalised time-stamped comments from evaluators and their peers. Feedback can also be streamlined with auto analysis, an automated reporting feature that provides deeper insight into an individuals performance and progress.

By generating metrics like rate of speech, speech clarity, and use of filler words, auto analysis gives individuals a better sense of what to focus on as they practice and self assess and helps evaluators save time by identifying potential problem areas faster.

Brightspace helps institutions and organisations generate meaningful outcomes by providing direct video evidence through competency, continuous learning opportunities, multi-level engagement, and scalable skill development.
