The VP of Product Management will be responsible for the success of delivering products to market and experience in deprecating legacy products and tools. The VP of Product needs to be a storyteller focused on selling the D2L Vision and be well versed in speaking to market needs as well as be empathetic to buyers in order to support sales and customer success. Buyers and D2L stakeholders need to understand why the current products in the suite meet their needs, this person should be the key to that positioning. The ideal candidate will be a cross-functional leader, collaborative, strategic with proven ability to deliver high-quality software solutions to the ed tech market.

Job Summary:

The VP of Product Management will need to mentor a strong team of product managers. The role requires recruiting, professional development, ongoing coaching and a strong lateral leader that can establish relationships across the business. This person should have a track record of identifying and recruiting potential talent, and then working actively and continuously with those people to develop their strengths and provide feedback to grow in their role. The ideal candidate will be technical, analytical, and passionate product-led growth leader who understands the value of how design, engineering and product work as one team.  This leader will bring the ability to build a workflow-driven enterprise product experience that delivers world class customer value and a focus on creating delightful user experiences. The ideal candidate will have a data driven mentality and provide a strong background in product analysis, adoption & business analytics, machine learning, and corporate finance.

This role will be instrumental in conceiving, defining, planning, aligning, prioritizing, and executing on small and large initiatives with a focus-minded approach to product strategy that directly contributes to our organization’s success in all learning markets. Applicants will need a history of leading and developing product management organizations that have successfully collaborated and driven outcomes with engineering, marketing, partners, design and sales.

How will I make an impact?

  • Be the ‘Product Owner’ that the engineering teams look up to.
  • Owning the Product Roadmap Process – Define and Develop a product roadmap that represents key deliverables across multiple markets, inclusive of customer asks and strategic market direction
  • Ensure products are aligned to company’s product strategy that is supported by growth and revenue.
  • Provide technical and program oversight for every product in the portfolio.
  • Work closely with executive leadership to ensure day-to-day activities have the appropriate priority and have strong alignment to roadmap.
  • Provide timely updates to the executive team on roadmap successes, changes to the roadmap, and the time to market.

Customers:  You will maintain a view of and work with both new and potential customers.   

  • Work with potential customers and support existing customers with an empathetic ear.
  • Support market analysis and targeting based on customer needs and product market fit 
  • Support sales process w/ presentations, strategy, RFP’s, etc. 
  • Partner with sales enablement to keep our sales teams trained and appraised on the latest developments with our product and in the market. 
  • Maintain a view of most requested/needed market product feature priorities during the sales and pre-sales process – differentiators and gaps. 
  • Work with existing customers to review roadmap and product specific needs.
  • Track customer, partner, revenue, and particularly activity churn for products in the suite. 
  • Support Client Sales Executives in: 1) customer retention and 2) upsell of premium features 
  • Maintain a view of most requested/needed market product feature priorities – differentiators and gaps by participating in QBRs, customer advisory boards, and analyzing usage, NPS, etc…

Product    

  • Own the product roadmap across the organization.  Map product priorities to market needs and business opportunities.  
  • Develop products with implementation teams in mind to ensure world beating customer onboarding experience as evidenced by adoption data. 
  • Support our partners team and ecosystem.  Prioritize priority partnerships for your segment. 
  • Communicate audience specific segment views of the roadmap internally and externally 
  • Take point on build / buy / partner decisions in your segment
  • Align the products, product features, partners, service offerings into market ready offerings. 
  • Create and support business cases for new products or packages 
  • Maintain a view of all products in the segment and how they work together, relative importance in the portfolio, and the proposed evolution 

People Leadership and Performance

  • You will collaborate through cross-functional teams to accomplish established corporate and team goals and effectively manage relationships with other D2L teams
  • Responsible for supporting vision, planning and defining team objectives, and leading execution of objectives
  • Work with your peers and leaders to drive productivity, efficiency, and hold team accountable for high quality outcomes
  • Play key role with interviewing, hiring and onboarding new team members. Provide expertise and coaching/mentorship to the team members.
  • Produce and actively participate in knowledge sharing as well as professional development initiatives
  • Mentorship of other leaders (typically Managers or Senior Managers)
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and apply extensive knowledge of company or industry within the business function
  • Ability to influence Executive Leadership Team on extremely critical matters

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • 10 years experience as a leader in software product management.
  • Excellent communication and customer-conversation skills including demo-god and public-speaking experience.
  • Guru-level game storming, writing, communication skills a must
  • Ed tech Product management experience focused on Higher Ed, K-12 and Corporate learning would be advantageous  
  • Ability to 100% own initiatives. Self-motivated and can operate and execute with a sense of urgency, discipline, decisiveness and focus.
  • Proven ability to meet or exceed assigned targets, budgets and deadlines.
  • Proven ability to confidently and clearly communicate both technical and business topics to a variety of groups, including customers, D2L senior leadership team, designers, architects and developers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with a cross-functional team consisting of Engineering, Design Architecture, Product Management, and Marketing.
  • Comfortable with conflicts, capable of influencing cross-functional teams without formal authority
  • Passionate problem solver
  • Strong desire for learning new things
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills – capable of explaining complex requirements in simple words
  • Experience working with large enterprises, understanding their needs and capabilities in deploying new product-led software
  • Prior experience of software development and good understanding of software engineering methodologies is a big plus
  • Experience with SaaS model / cloud-based security systems is a plus

 Recommendations:

  • MBA and Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Computer Science, Engineering or related fields of study.
