As a full time employee in the role of Site Reliability Engineer, you will directly contribute to the support and stability of D2L's Cloud solutions by working to improve the observability and reliability of D2L products and services, automate workflows and processes, and coordinating with teams across our organization.

Job Summary:

Working in a 24x7 AWS Cloud-based environment, a successful candidate in this role plays a key role in analyzing problems, performing troubleshooting, and implementing process improvements. They will work on opportunities to improve workflows and implement failure mitigation and alert response through automation. The team works closely with D2L’s internal support and infrastructure teams to effectively coordinate rapid resolution of major and minor incidents and communicate updates with internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will also have an opportunity to use and automate against AWS technologies and learn and use skills in troubleshooting and networking.

How will I make an impact?

  • By being an engaged member of the team: identifying any areas we can improve across the organization and working cross-functionally as needed to fix them.
  • Suggesting and implementing solutions to reduce team overhead and time to resolution of system failures and/or eliminating failure scenarios entirely.
  • Automating workflows including failure mitigation, and alert response.
  • Using Chaos Engineering to test expected failure states and identify opportunities for further resiliency.
  • Analyzing site performance and utilization metrics and looking for ways to improve system visibility.

Specific Responsibilities of the role:

  • Mitigating impact to services using modern AWS technologies and services
  • Performing troubleshooting and log analysis for application related issues
  • Upkeep of process and procedures documentation (using Confluence Wiki)
  • Reviewing, approving, and implementing standard changes
  • Responding promptly to service-impacting events as required and resolving impact.
    Maintaining and improving documentation and processes.
  • Fixing or correctly directing escalated issues from support
  • Automating workflows including failure mitigation, and alert response.
  • Build solutions to some problems for operations and support teams
  • Using Chaos Engineering to test service failure conditions and identify opportunities for further resiliency.

What you’ll bring to the role:

Must Have

  • Good oral and written communication skills in English
  • Experience with using scripting and/or programming skills (PowerShell, SQL, Node.js, Javascript, JQuery, HTML, .NET, C#, etc.)
  • Experience troubleshooting web applications, ideally .NET applications running in IIS on Windows.

Nice To have

    • Experience troubleshooting Windows systems
    • Investigating and triaging Web application problems
    • Cloud Administrator experience (AWS)
    • Experience with using various monitoring applications and tools (Pingdom, OpsGenie, AppDynamics, Grafana)
    • Basic understanding and practical knowledge of Linux/Unix systems
    • Basic understanding of CI/CD pipeline (Jenkins, GitHub)
    • Previous experience in technical customer service role
    • Experience coordinating incidents and/or knowledge of ITIL framework
    • Experience working with .NET framework and C#
