What skills will today’s students and tomorrow’s employees need to thrive in the future of work? What roles will educational institutions and employers play in developing them? How do you know if your investments in training and education are targeting the right skills and moving the needle in improving them? These are just some of the questions we’re being compelled to answer in the face of the emerging skills gap.

Our Skills Connection Summit Canada brought together a wide variety of stakeholders and industry experts to discuss not only some of the issues they’re facing but also the actions they’re taking to overcome obstacles and forge stronger skills connections. Keep reading to see some of the day’s key themes and stay tuned for full recordings from each presentation and panel discussion.

We kicked off the day with a welcoming address from Jeremy Auger, chief strategy officer at D2L, and a keynote presentation delivered by Kevin Surace, innovator, entrepreneur, and chairman and CTO of Appvance. Both set the stage and touched on a number of topics we’d come back to throughout the day, including the types of skills that will be important in the future of work, the evolving role of technology, and the need for stakeholders to work together in seeking and creating solutions to bridge the skills gap.

Our first panel discussion involved industry experts from a variety of backgrounds to discuss practical ways in which we can align skill development with organizational outcomes and use technology to solve challenges both at an individual level and as a collective community.

Next, we took a look at two specific strategies we can use to address the skills gap, work-integrated learning, and micro-experiential learning. Our panel’s participants answered questions about measuring success, implementing feedback, and more and explored best practices that educational institutions and employers are using to equip students and employees with the skills they need to be successful.

Fahd Gulzar, senior consultant with AWS, shared with us some of the work AWS Academy is doing to help colleges, universities, and employers deliver traditional and hands-on learning experiences that give people access to industry-leading cloud skills.

We wrapped up the day with a final panel discussion on policy responses. Our panelists delved into trends we’re seeing, where there are still gaps, and ultimately what actions we need to take to support the future of work and learning and enable workforces to be more adaptive in the face of accelerating technological change.
