As more student’s access education through a learning management system (LMS), the question often posed is “How can organizations ensure that integrity is being used during assessments?” However, perhaps the more pressing question is “Are there ways to empower students about integrity and ease stress before an assessment?”
Students may feel anxiety under the pressure of someone watching them during an exam. Moreover, given the global discourse about privacy and data stewardship, they may also worry that their personal information will be stored digitally, making it possible for hackers to access it. During a recent webinar, 81% of participants stated that privacy and security of proctoring programs are a concern for students, and they wanted to know how to fix this and empower students during online assessments. Student privacy and accessibility are top of mind when discussing integrity of online assessments. For today’s colleges and universities, the security and privacy of students and faculty have become a priority, and that trend is expected to continue.
BCIT, Integrity Advocate, and D2L Come Together to Discuss Assessment Integrity

1. Use a proctoring service that prioritizes student privacy.

2. Clearly communicate what integrity means at your institution and how your proctoring service works.

No two courses are the same. As a result, students’ needs vary. For example, a student who requires academic accommodations for their assessments (such as extra time, oral instructions, or study guides) will require a more customizable experience when the assessment is monitored in order to ensure the student’s behavior does not get flagged. It is important to have a system that is customizable for monitoring integrity to meet the needs of every student—and every instructor.
5. Remove the obstacles that students face during online exams.
Online assessments can pose serious obstacles for some students. Accessibility should be top of mind when discussing online examinations because students have different needs and may require accommodations during exams.
