New Presentation Type – Five-Minute Flares
At Fusion 2019, we are retiring the poster sessions and replacing them with something we hope you’ll find exciting — Five-Minute Flares!
Each presentation is 15 slides, each displayed for 20 seconds before the next automatically appears. Maybe you’ve heard of Pecha Kucha presentations, which are similar — but the name is so hard to pronounce.
Similar to the poster presentations, Five-Minute Flares will be presented in the Exhibit Hall right after lunch. Unlike in the poster sessions, as a presenter, you can expect to be heard by an audience of a few hundred people as you share your knowledge in our Speakers Corner station. The spotlight will be on you and your ideas.
Five-Minute Flares are a perfect opportunity to share an innovative idea that might not be fully baked or to share a successful strategy that you’ve employed for years to improve student learning, increase your productivity, or reach other desirable outcomes.
The key to a successful flare presentation is the use of interesting visuals and fluid speaking. Your 15 slides need to be timed to flip every 20 seconds (for a total time of five minutes), and you need to be able to speak clearly and forcefully to get your point across during the allotted time.
At this point, we’re uncertain whether we will do this on both Monday and Tuesday at Fusion 2019, but we certainly hope to shoot off some flares on both days. We’re shooting for a minimum of six and a maximum of eight presenters to make up the agenda for one of the days. If we get enough willing participants, we’ll do it on both days of the main conference.
Presenters of the Five-Minute Flares earn the full presenter discount. The call for proposals will be open soon, but in the meantime, start planning your proposal for launching a Five-Minute Flare at Fusion 2019. It’ll be fun and educational; that’s a win-win.
Of course, we’re also looking forward to your session proposals for the main tracks and labs for Fusion 2019. Whether you’re interested in doing a regular presentation, a roundtable discussion, or a Five-Minute Flare; we hope you’ll join us in Kissimmee in July.
