FUSION 2014: Day 2 Perspective from John Baker

  • 3 Min Read

FUSION is in full swing!  It is energizing connecting with so many friends, partners, and clients even as I have been racing between sessions and meetings—this event is such an exhilarating experience. It’s a tremendous learning opportunity for those of us who love to learn.

I started my day talking to customers and partners from our international delegation. Some came from Columbia, Brazil, England, others from the Middle East, while others came from as far as Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. It’s amazing to hear them share their stories and talk about some of the amazing opportunities that are emerging across the globe.

One of my favorite moments in between all the great meetings with clients, prospects, and partners was talking with some of the students that are here with their universities and colleges. Some of the students made the trip to Nashville for the very first time from places like Europe and all over the US and Canada. It is clear this group of students is ready to leave their mark on their campuses by building apps, sharing ideas, and contributing in meaningful ways to the learning experiences.

It’s also been great to see how quickly and adeptly people here at the conference starting to use the Brightspace name. We had a few questions along the way—which we always expect to see with a change like this—but I was impressed at how quickly people were embracing the name. For those who have just joined the conversation, we introduced Brightspace to the world on stage yesterday as the new name for our integrated learning platform. But our company name Desire2Learn isn’t going away—it’s just getting a bit of a trim! We’ve simplified it down to D2L, making it shorter and easier for everyone, especially those in our international markets. This change demonstrates our commitment to going beyond the LMS—strongly supported by the many product announcements and ongoing investments in analytics and personalization as well as the strategic partnerships we’ve formalized with IBM, Microsoft, and the publisher community. The next generation of learning has arrived!

Perhaps the highlight of my day (and yes that is me in a bow tie) was the Desire2EXCEL Awards, followed quickly by the sessions and posters. You, our clients, inspire us so much with the amazing ways you build new experiences on our platform, collaborate, and push innovative teaching and learning forward. We have a post dedicated to giving each of these winners the focus they deserve, so stay tuned for it!  We hope to see even more nominees for next year’s awards!

In addition to the awards we highlighted the work of so many others during our Community & Colleagues panel. This is always one of my favourite sessions because it really brings out the collaboration and sharing that make the D2L client community such a unique and tremendous group.

I’m looking forward to the final day of the FUSION main conference with all of you tomorrow and was thrilled to join you last night at a very special event at the Country Music Hall of Fame!
