Announcing Brightspace Pulse – our new student mobile app!

  • 4 Min Read

Today at Brightspace Fusion 2015, we introduced Brightspace Pulse: a new mobile app to help students stay organized and get things done.

Why did we build Brightspace Pulse?

The world is going mobile. Everyone knows this, but most are surprised by how fast it’s happening. According to Ericsson, 85% of the world population will have a smartphone in four years.

Mobile has always been central to the Brightspace platform. You can make reflections in Brightspace ePortfolio whenever it hits you in your experiential learning. You can download content-to-go with Brightspace Binder™. And you can use the mobile web to access Brightspace Learning Environment on most devices.

Brightspace Pulse is a major opportunity to make students’ lives easier. We started by asking students, “what is the most important thing you need help with?”

The answers were loud, clear, and consistent. Today’s students find it hard to keep track of all the dates for readings, assignments, and tests across courses.

Let’s look at the course load of a typical third year org psych student, Jake:

It’s pretty clear how students can be overwhelmed and struggle to stay on track.

Let’s take a deeper look at how Brightspace Pulse addresses this challenge.

How does Pulse help students?

Pulse helps you stay on track

  • Look at Day, Week, Month schedule views to help you plan ahead
  • Graphical Visualizations help you see your busy and slower times to plan your schedule

Pulse helps you take action

  • Add or edit coursework, assignments, evaluations, to-do’s and grade weightings to organize and plan your learning
  • Seamlessly auto-login to your browser to reference your learning materials

When will Brightspace Pulse be available?

Brightspace is a free app that we anticipate will be available in August, ready for the new school year. Device versions will be available for iOS (compatible with iOS 8.0+) and Android smartphones (compatible with Android 4.4+). The Brightspace Pulse will be available for clients on Continuous Delivery and compatible with the latest version of 10.5.

We can’t wait to get more feedback on Pulse when it’s in your hands. In the meantime, here’s what some students had to say about Pulse:

Cheers,

Renny Monaghan

    1. Hey Jane,

These steps will help you set up the app:
      1. Open the app on your mobile device.
      2. Search for your institution and click on the appropriate school.
      3. Log in with your school’s or organization’s credentials just like you would for the Brightspace Platform.

If you cannot find your organization or school when you search, you can add it manually using its URL.

  1. I’m a college teacher and just discovered this app. It looks useful. However while the announcements and calendar items are visible inside the app, I can’t see our discussions. Am I missing something or the app doesn’t have this feature? If it doesn’t the app seems incomplete.
    Thank you.
